This doesn't make sense to me. No one deserves anything. Fighters don't get title shots because they "deserve" them, they got them because they indicated they were competent enough to capitalize on them. If 1967 Ali was brought back in a time machine would he have to fight 25 bums before getting a title shot? Obviously not, because we know what he's capable of. Likewise, if you have a bajilion amateur wins, and then string together back to back W's against 10 top contenders, then why would you have fight 20 more unranked bums to "prove" yourself? Because other fighters did? Ok... good for them? Mike Tyson fought like 30 bums in his first 3 years. Loads of old school fighters did. These fights tested absolutely nothing, nor did they make Mike deserving of anything. They just happened. Furthermore, what d'you mean "protected"? How does fighting better competition earlier in your professional career protect you? How is not exactly the opposite? Crushing tin cans puts you at risks, but having championship bouts in your 2nd and 3rd fight is protecting you? Wat?
I mean it's true so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ tis an application of the Just World Fallacy to believe anyone deserves anything and a mindset that I personally believe can set one up for confusion, disillusionment and disappointment.
Love how you went out your way to link this lol. Love old movies. My Dad would leave them on in the background for no reason. I've seen Jason and the Argonauts, Aeroplane, couple of Clint Eastwood movies and basically every Bruce Lee movie like a dozen times each because of this. That and I can do a pretty good transatlantic impression.
If only he'd have gone pro after that first Olymoic gold, at 21 or whatever and been at featherweight, could have dominate there for years then 130, 135 he would have done well, but would have had time to build a bigger legacy at FW SFW, and closed out things in fashion at LW before getting beaten. His advanced age at entry meant he had to move up quicker and not hang in his natural weight. He's a little man
Citing yourself is not only permissable, it's entirely encouraged in a situation such as this. Cheers, DP.
I don’t think he’s the best of the best. He’s had some close calls and lost to Lopez. I personally don’t think he’s the best LW today. Maybe not even the second. He’s top 5 LW in his own era H2H, maybe top 3. A LOT of guys in the 21st century would at least have good chances to beat him.
