I'm guessing they were under the bare knuckle rules where a round would last as long as one of the fighters gets knocked down or takes a knee? These were 110 3 minute rounds i believe!
Very true, as the fight was under 'Prize Ring Rules'. Both fighters did happen to die... albeit, many years after the fight. Interestingly.. numerous women were present at the actual fight. "Bell's Life" made a natable comment regarding this fact. 110 x 3 or any other lengthy fight for that matter, has always been washed down with ringside/ropeside conversation between combatants and viewers.. quite often, the referee had to keep the fighters mind on the job.. "you're here to fight.. not talk!!" Personally, I'd say all bouts lasting such extended hours were little more than Mother's Club meetings with severe violence thrown in. Had the severe violence been from start to finsh, then less than 10-20 minutes would be a cause for death.. We often hear of a single punch causing death.. How soon we all forget.
Andy Bowen's next fight after burke fight was against Jack Everhardt month latter and he won by 85 round decision!
That speaks volumes for the injuries Bowen DID NOT sustain the month prior, and the lack of intensity over 110 rounds. Sayers/Hennan Newspaper accounts describe far better reviews from April 1860.
I dont have a link mate.. I have an original 2 page (back to back) Illustrated Times April 21, 1860, account of the fight. Hoping to post it in entirty for the sake of the 110th Anniversary... I'll post the entire paper beforehand if wanted?
There's some information here about Tom Sayers: http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_SvmlM7-oN.../vRRxEceZYTw/s1600-h/ff+photo+vol+1+no+11.jpg
I gotta say, many of Floyd Mayweather Jr.'s fights SEEMED to go on forever. I usually don't make it past the seventh, so some of them might still be going on.:blurp These Pretzels are making me thirsty.!
