keep in mind that I am rating the fighters on the night that they fought either Louis or Ali.

The Lou Nova that Louis beat was better than the version of Patterson that Ali beat the second time around, Patterson had back, shoulder and all kinds of problems and it was his final fight.
Bob Pastor was better than Terrell.
The Schmeling that Louis beat, second time around, was under probably the worst conditions that any contender to the crown ever fought under.
Farr was better than Liston that night because Liston took a dive.
I think that Archie Moore was very, very, past it by the time that Ali fought him, and I would not it past an 8-0 up and coming guy to beat that version of Archie Moore.

Of course if you pick the five best of each, Ali is the clear winner, that can't be argued by any sane fan. My point being is that on a fight by fight basis, the comp. is closer than many people give credit for.

Louis first nine defenses are, in my opinion, better overall quality then pre exile Ali. Louis fought better opp. leading up to the title than Ali did.

I don't think that's a thing you can actually "stop".

I will throw another question into the quation.

How do you think judges in Louis's era would have liked Ali's style?

Back then making the fight was all important and it was hard to take a decision if you fought to survive. This would have worked agaist Ali in many of his fights though in some like the Young fight it could have worked to his advantage.

The simple fact of the matter is that Ali given the different set of circumstances would have evolved differently. You could say that about other super talents like SRR via the other way too of course. Guys like these are not going to be denied.

I wasnt thinking of him being denied. More droping a few decisions that he would not have done otherwise.

Also if a fight really did start go against him all that holding would be penalised.

You miss my point i think. If Ali was born in Louis' time his style would have evolved to suit the style of the day. Of course if we take Ali back as he was he would take time to adapt to the rules and leanings of the time. How could he not. This cannot be held against him. Bring Louis' opponents forward and they will be fish out of water with a lot of things. It's an interesting study, i must admit.

Joe Louis was a Super talent also and would have adapted to the 70's well, I think Louis would have easily handled certain fighter that gave Ali fits, like Jones,Cooper,Mildenburger,Young, and walked threw Lyle,Foster,Eliis,Norton.....I think Louis would have KO'd Liston and Foreman in destructive manner both were too slow for Joe's fast combo's, Joe would have to box carefully and use his fast combo's but the cream rises to the top and the only time Joe lost was early on in his Career and late when he was older and to great fighters...I see no one in Ali's career that would be a problem for Joe, Liston and Foreman were big names to have on your record but they were both flawed and Louis would also have exposed them

    Mate i totally agree.

Well i think the Ali just pre exile would have easily beaten all four. Young would be spoiler tough but i'm sure peak Ali wins. Young could be awkward for Louis.

Personally i think both are dangerous as fukk to Louis lol

He also never beat anything quite like Foreman and Liston mate. God no. Please don't give me Baer and Schmelling.

So let me get this straight, peak Foreman, peak Frazier and the Liston Ali fought aren't even a "problem"??? Yet numerous vastly less talented guys dropped Joe?

We might as well include Holmes too since he was in Ali's career.

Hmmm, somethings not quite adding up here.

Liston was also brutally Ko'd by Leotis Martin and got dropped and had his Jaw broke by 170lb Marty Marshall, Foreman was a wide swinger and the best lighthevyweight he fought Peralta not a puncher or master boxer gave him more trouble that he should and the not so great puncher(check his record) Lyle had Foreman down twice and close to being KO'd both men Foreman and Liston were dangerous for anyone but could also be beaten by many

For goodness sakes Bummy Liston was at least 37 at the time and some might speculate 40+. His career was way behind him. You go at other fighters in very hazy ways. Louis was easily pumped by Marciano and lost to the very small Ezzard Charles easily if you follow.

Yes, in his 8th pro fight. Marshall was actually 180 if you care to be honest. Bummy if you have to resort to criticism such as the above two examples then you really need to go back to the drawing board. Absolutely pisspoor tactics, and this is bulletproof if you care to debate it. Sensationalism crossed with massive bias might begin to decribe it.

The same pisspoor tactics again, yet again. Their first fight is in Foreman's 10th pro fight and George wins it 9-1, 7-3 and 5-4. Incidentally your light heavyweight Peralta weighs 197. They meet again and Foreman tko's him in 10, incidentally Peralta is 196. Foreman is 2 years and 10 fights off Frazier.

Beaten by many my ass. Lyle did indeed give Foreman hell for a variety of reasons.

Bummy you have picked out ridiculous points of Liston and foreman's careers. Sadly if i went the same silly route we would see Louis had plenty of hairy moments too, but many of his were in his prime. Via your standards i can take the Schmelling loss and sit it upon a pedestal. As well as the Charles and Marciano losses. As well as Two Ton sitting him on his ass. And more.

    Fair go mate :hey

that's why i don't reply to him - it's a waste of time. He is very foolish. Foreman until Ali beat him looked invincible. He had BRUTALLY destroyed 2 top class fighters in Frazier and Norton. Even Ali's own thought he was in for a terrible beating. You can plan all you like but can u take his power punches without falling - well the fact is most couldn't. That's what Archie Moore and Sandy Sandler thought but what do they know
