He has to fight peteron to stay active, plus they both needed an opponent. I actually think its matthysse's camp who called for the catchweight as it was them holding up the fight for a couple of weeks because all they were saying is we want garcia. If matthysse ends peterson then no one will accept garcia - peterson. This tournament is bull****, its just a promotional tool for both fights, ideally they want the winner to fight the winner but garcia is under no obligation to fight peterson or matthysse. Even angel garcia said that he aint heard nothing about a tournement, its al haymon who picks the opponents for them and he can't do much if matthysse is mandotary.

If he wanted to stay active, he would have picked an easier opponent, surely.

It's not yet been revealed who chose the catchweight, but yes, it is possible that Matthysse requested it. But I highly doubt it, personally. Because if it's like you say (Garcia being under no obligation to fight Matthysse or PEDerson), then clinging on to the mando position and denying yourself the chance to grab a world title, ends up being pointless. I honestly think holding on to the mando position is almost worthless to him. Because if it was that valuable, then then losing to PEDerson (and maintaining his mando position in the process) should still lead him to a WBC title shot immediately, right? But we know that won't happen. We know PEDerson will get his shot at Garcia before him. Why? Because of the tournament. And what's worse is that Khan will probably get his shot after . And after Garcia's wiped the floor with him again, he'll have probably moved up a division.

Matthysse will be left with jack all unless he knocks PEDerson out to begin with - which is a tough task.

You guys actually think GBP will put Garcia in with Matthysse? They've been protecting him ever since he won the belt, no chance.

Peterson has no chance of going this distance with Matthysse, Khan cant punch and he had Lamont down and hurt several times. imagine what Matthysse's punches will do.

Matthysse to put a brutal beating on Peterson and stop him in 8.

That's why they've put PEDerson in his, Matthysse's, path. They're hoping PEDerson puts a halt to his run.

:think Well, he survived Ortiz's punching power - which is greater than Matthysse's, in my opinion. He can be stunned, but he has very good recovering abilities. I reckon he'll last the distance and beat Matthysse.

He lasted the distance with Ortiz simply because Victor is **** and he still nearly got knocked out no way does Ortiz punch as hard as Matthysse, IMO.

Peterson has always looked fragile, if Khan can hurt him so badly then Matthysse can knock him out cold.

Tell me how Peterson is going to win though? Off the back foot? Not a chance, doesn't have the skills or elusiveness to survive being walked down and executed.

How about walking forward and meeting Lucas head on? Matthysse will destroy him if he tries.

While I was reading this I was thinking it's more or less expected that Matthysse will win, I personally think he will, imagine he gains the IBF title then goes to unify with likely Garcia and is forced to drop the IBF title, that leaves it vacant and very possible for Top Rank to get two of their fighters fighting for it, as world titles are powerful marketing tools the Golden Boy roster losing it isn't a good thing.

Yes, Victor being **** played its part. But we can’t be neglectful of PEDerson’s adjustments. And that’s what I think will give him the edge against Matthysse.

Because, whilst not being extraordinary, he’s still a solid all-round fighter than can box and brawl depending on what’s required of him. Don’t get me wrong, Matthysse can also box a bit himself, but he’s accustomed to being the hunter when he’s in his boxer-puncher mode. People tend to be in constant retreat from him. So I’m curious to see what he’ll be like when someone returns the favour. PEDerson won’t just be running away, he’ll be taking it to him in spurts, too. And contrary to what you’ve just said, I believe he’s good enough in both areas to off-set Matthysse long enough to get a decision. One of Matthysse’s problems -- despite him doing well to not exhibit it in recent fights -- is that he takes his time in adjust!ing/warming up. I reckon if PEDerson switches his box or brawl modes regularly -- kinda’ similar to what Alvarado just did with Rios -- he can upset Matthysse’s rhythm and make it difficult for him to get in the fight.

And honestly, PEDerson is not as fragile as you're making him out to be. He recovers well and gets stronger as the fight goes on.

Edit: Oh, and Victor combined with his speed, size and strength, is a more devestating puncher than Matthysse, in my opinion.

Good point. GBP want to keep their 140 titles nicely spread out in their stable. Having too many titles in one fighter's hands, is putting too many eggs in one basket.

It was initially announced as a title fight.Should the promoters change this, then this is a breach of contract ,unless BOTH affected parties agreed to this change.Something is amiss here, which is beyond me.In addition, what about the fans who purchased tickets expecting to witness 2 world title fights and not one-also why would the network(Showtime) agree to this watered down marketing of the event?

Is this because Peterson can't make weight or becuase Lucas can't? Or just because they don't want to give Lucs the title?

Definitely has nothing to do with struggling for weight, so I believe it's the latter.

But the excuse being used is that, by making it a 141 catchweight, it allows both guys to keep their belts. PEDerson can remain a world champion, and Matthysse gets to keep his mandatory spot to challenge for Garcia. But as I've mentioned in my previous posts, Matthysse's getting the **** end of the deal. Because regardless of what happens, win or lose, PEDerson is allowed to remain a world champion. Whereas Matthysse doesn't get anything. He just gets given something he already has  (a mando spot).
