Yeah but if Martinez beats Bute that is some HOF stuff. And as for Bute's motivation, that's simply money. That would probably be his biggest payday and very winnable fight for him. I would certainly prefer Bute to fight Martinez than Hopkins or Miranda-type opposition.
He was dead wrong about that one, and so was I. I honestly thought this one would look like Cotto-Margarito. But I don't think this is sour grapes on his part, as Bute would ****ing TRAIN WRECK Martinez. I'd be surprised if Martinez lasted more than 5.
He'd definitely last 5, and may be ahead after the first 3/4 rounds - I wonder when he last lost 2 of the first 4 rounds in a fight. But in the middle rounds Bute would muller him.
I have great respect for Dwyer. He has picked some huge upsets with great confidence that I thought were crazy picks. He is the Hopkins of boxing analysis for me - never count Dwyer out. ...But listening to him talk about Bute, I sometimes get the impression he doesn't know Bute very well. For example, he says in this video that Bute is a KO puncher and then compares him favourably to Abraham. No one who knows Bute very well would say that... He also says that Bute let Miranda advance towards him. Again, this is not true. Bute advanced towards Miranda in order to put Miranda on the backfoot so that he couldn't set up his big right hand coming forward. Now, of course Bute was planning to counterpunch Miranda as he was lunging in... but that is LUNGING in, not walking Bute down - BIG difference. So, without talking about Bute vs. Martinez, I would say Dwyer may not be the very best person to listen to when analysis Bute... as much as I respect him.
martinez isn't even a middleweight, so he's done well to beat the top middleweight in the world, pavlik and to lose a controversial fight of the year classic to paul williams. he won't be able to beat bute. this is no knock on the ability of martinez. super middleweight is just a bridge too far. it's like asking bute to challenge tomasz adamek (if adamek was still a cruiser). martinez is keeping his WBC 154-pound title, FFS. he's still a light middle, albeit an exceptional one who can beat the best middle (unlike winky who tried; unlike terry norris who never tried). he's entitled to wait out some big name welters if he feels like it (margarito, cotto) though the biggest fights are rematches with pavlik and williams up at middleweight (where he has some titles, too).
Bute is a jump too far for Sergio. Martinez should be looking at a Margo rematch at 154 to avenge that loss or a rematch with the winner of Cintron-PW.
