Lacy had a return fight with Tsypko and scraped past him. Tsypko was of a good pedigree as European champ and holding wins over Adamu when undefeated and B Magee, who is now European champ and WBA regular mandatory

Although The Ring is used often, its rating system isnt really any better than many others. I remember Lacy being #1 with some other ratings.
In truth Lacy could never be #1 rated because you had the best SMW in the division at that time. Bute is #1 by luck more than anything at this time, because of other guys being defeated but fighting at a higher level, ie Butes resume dosent rate as high as Kesslers or Frochs, but Bute is #1 because Ward beat Kessler and Butes limited resume is overall better than Wards at this time.
Dont get me wrong because I think Butes potentially very good and would favour him at this time to beat Ward

Today I'd say Lacy. Even though he may once have been the most overrated boxer that ever lived and that his resume is not that strong, as of now I still think it's a bit over Bute's.

But lets keep in mind that Bute is still in his prime and is very gifted and should be able to get some good names under his resume. Lets start with Pavlik!

I don't necessarily disagree. Both had fought a lot of top 10 guys but not any top 5 guys really. The big difference is that Bute hasn't had any of the top guys available to fight him, so I'm still reserving judgment until he actually has an opportunity to fight them. The only time anyone has legitimately been available was that he and Froch were negotiating to fight before the Super Six, and then shortly after talks fell apart the Super Six was announced (leading me to believe Froch's team pulled out of talks since there was a bigger money opportunity).

Edit: to clarify, I mean Bute's resume now is pretty similar to Lacy's at the time he fought Calzaghe. Obviously Lacy's resume has taken a big hit since then.

:good. Thats similar to how I see it (bit undecided really). When I started this thread, it was really to highlight, something that ive noted for a long time, that hype seems to speak louder than results, especially if people dont recognise names on a resume.
The Reid that Lacy blasted out had beaten that Brinkley years back, but Brinkley is a recognised TV name, even if not expected to win

I read Butes team didnt want to fight Froch, but I really dont know which. Froch hasnt ducked any big fights, and Im sure Bute would like a big fight.
Bute does have other options though, in WBO champ Steiglitz, WBA regular champ Sartison and other guys like Pascal at his old weight

In all fairness to Lacy, after the Calzaghe fight he never had the chance to recover his confidence (which was his greatest asset). In his first fight back against Tsypko (the rematch), he tore his shoulder and that really killed his career. I honestly believe that Jeff Lacy never reached his potential. Not to say he would've been a whole lot better than before he stepped in with Calzaghe, but I think his career could've ended alot better than it did. Watching him struggle with Sheika was the writing on the wall.

We will never know how good Lacy could have been, because the hype surrounding him was ridiculous, and he was thrown in too deep too soon.
It makes you wonder if T Cloud the IBF LHW champ looked at what happend to Lacy, in deciding to pull out against Zsolt Erdei

Andrade was ranked 4th by The Ring when Bute fought him first. (Bute was ranked 3rd). I think Andrade remained 4th even after their fight.
