You're right. Mago did repeatedly complain to his corner something was wrong. If they really knew him well enough, then they should have stopped it, if Mago was not normally crying about things. But no way was he ever really in a position for the ref or doctor to stop it.
I wasn't one of the people that thought he was going to go very far but he was a ballsy fighter with big power and I liked him. I feel bad for him. It would've been nice to see him hit the Klitschko lottery.
He's had brain surgery ... http://www.usatoday.com/story/sport...ighter-abdusalamov-has-brain-surgery/3429595/
For what it's worth, my sister had a similar problem and similar surgery after a serious car accident. She went on to make a full recovery. Hope all goes well for Mago and there is every chance he will be ok from here.
I don't know. Hindsight is always 20/20 but the left side of his face was extremely swollen after the 5th round or so.
Stevens' corner/ref stopped the fight, if not, Stevens would have taken a lot more punishment for nothing..............the might have saved his life. I will NEVER forget Gerald McClellen...............
They should've took it as an indication he wanted to quit when he was asking about the swelling on his face.
This. They must have known about the hand injury and that a bone was broken in his face by the 5th round or so. Assuming they were aware of all this, why would they let him continue when it was clear that he had no answer for the counter right hook and that he was going to need a KO to win. I know that it's easy to second guess after the fact but c'mon...
There were disconcerting signs in Abdusalamov, particularly early in the fight. His corner should not be blamed for this, but they should definitely be criticized slightly.
Thing is, though...he had remained competitive up until that point and still looked to be in the fight. The extent of the swelling and bruising was indeed troubling, but it really wasn't affecting his ability to fight back with some degree of effectiveness when a punch landed. In fact, his performance exceeded my personal expectations...I didn't think he'd be able to connect as frequently on Perez as he did during the course of that fight. It reminded me a bit of Delvin Rodriguez-Oscar Diaz...where there were no definitive point in the fight where you had to stop it. Unfortunately, it had a similar ending...but this isn't one of those fights where you can criticize any one party too strongly for failing to prevent it from happening.
Hindsight is always 20/20. I most certainly would not put the entire blame on his corner, Abdusalamov was in a spirited fight where he actually had a chance of winning. Like I said, there were disconcerting signs in him early on, but I'm not so sure I would've pulled him out, and that's just being honest.
