I seriously think they realise the damage a name like that could do them. But let's play it the way you put it, Khan initially would be taking four fights from now upto December 2011, correct? In your case: 1. Erik Morales 2. Next? 3. Next? 4. Next? You think he's going to fight old washed up lightweights till then? When I took a bet like this, I knew it was a calculated risk and I have enough faith in the Khan team to know he'll fight either Maidana, Bradley and Devon by then.
Anyone see the interview with Khan in a recent weekly British magazine? Said he had put four names in front of Golden Boy. Maidana, Katsidis, Marquez and someone else (I forget the other one). Said he wanted to fight one of those four and then go for the winner of Bradley v Alexander. I dont want to see Khan v Marquez. JMM is a legend and I'm sure he'd jump at the chance to be a four weight champion, but in his current guise I dont think he'd beat Khan. Plus it offers nothing for those criticising Khan for not facing a valid puncher. I've made my thoughts known on Maidana already, but I think a fight against either Ortiz or Katsidis would be a good opponent for Khan. I'm guessing GBP will plump for JMM though.
How is JMM 'not a valid puncher'? And how is Katsidis a better one? Trouble is people look at KO% numbers and not at who was being ko'd. IMO Katsidis probably has more raw power (though obv it's hard to say definitively without being hit by both...), JMM has more chance of knocking out any given opponent.
I would have agreed with you two years ago. These days, JMM is nowhere near what he once was and he has no business being at 140lbs. Dont get me wrong, I love the guy. But he's too small and not strong enough to be at 140. I like Khan, but I'd love to see JMM beat him because I'm a big JMM fan. I just dont think he's a LWW. Maybe you could say the same about Katsidis at 140 and that would be a valid point. But I think Kat could take his power with him much easier than JMM could.
The last two years cover the whole of JMM's lightweight career though. In that time he has two knockouts in three fights against Juan Diaz and Casamayor (both of which Katsidis has also fought, stopping neither). The only thing I can think is that people are reading too much into Marquez fighting a P4P number one at welterweight when really that should probably be discounted completely. Katsidis relies more on physical prowess than JMM so should be expected to have more trouble moving up in weight.
