No. I mis-spoke. Meant to say I'd pick every linear HW champ from Liston onwards over Marciano. But, now that I think about it - there might be a few exceptions there.
Rocky Marciano must be respected for 1. His record 2. His statistics 3. His performance for being a rather small man, when the tides were changing... On the other hand, 1. He fought in an era where most of the talent had dried up and the pool would not be re-filled for several years, hence he feasted like a carp off the dead corpses of the 40's, and when the sunlight of the 60's appeared, he retreated to the shade. 2. The men who were readily available to take the title in 1951, were basically non-indigenous to the heavyweight division... 3. He fought life and death for that 49-0 record like a hyena growling over a dead corps with a set of pears who were more interested in say.......getting a college education...
In a recent interview Holmes said Marciano would have been the toughest of all the ATG for him to defeat and Ali said the same thing
Marciano retired in 1955, if he waited for the sunlight of the 60's( Ali )he would have had to wait until 1964 when Ali won the title other than that I think Charles, Walcott, Moore, Layne, Lastarza, and the men they beat,Harold Johnson,Baker,Valdes, Henry,Bivens,Satterfield,Wallace,Bucceroni,Whitehurst were just as good as anyone in the 60's
When you say the men they beat you are simplifying an argument as we all know the A B C reality of boxing ... in addition, none of the men mentioned or the men they beat were better than Liston.
lISTON DID NOT WIN THE TITLE UNTIL 1962, ALMOST 7 YEARS AFTER mARCIANO RETIRED...In 1954-1955, liston was still in a 3 bout series with Marty Marshall who was already KO'd by Dembrell Davis 2 times also by Toxie Hall and Bob Baker(Victims of Archie Moore). It was not until 1959 that Liston started getting real attention with his Ko's over Big Cat Williams(who was already KO'd by Satterfeild) and others.Liston could not stop Bert Whitehurst who was KO'd 2 times by Archie. I am not so sure how well Liston stacks up against fighters who were not afraid of him. We would assume that he could get past the 32 year old Charles and the 38 year old Walcott but I myself would be not so sure. I thought a lot of Sonny when I was a kid but in reality Sonny quit 2 time vs Ali and was beaten young by Marshall and old by Leotis, small men, so I can not be so sure he gets past warriors like Walcott or Charles.
