Every paper in the US gave Cokkell no chance.Neither did George Whiting or Peter Wilson our leading boxing scribes, that isn't being wise after the event, its being wise BEFORE IT! BTW Cokkell didn't win a round!
In what other era would Cokkell be rated #2 heavyweight? Please to inform this viewer. In what other era would he be rated #2 lightheavy?
One of many examples of your intellectual dishonesty is bringing up Williams losses after 1964 conveniently leaving out the fact that he'd been shot, and was partially paralyzed.
"Even A past prime Patterson beat Eddie Machen" You didn't mention that Machen was past his prime as well and had mental issues at the time. And you wonder why people think you're dishonest.
Maybe we should look up Rex Layne' losses after he fought Marciano,? And no one shot him in the guts with a 357magnum!
I have never left out or forgotten that williams was gunned down. How can I with you guys swooning over him? the guy did very well to recover. But career wise, Between being gunned down and being knocked out by Bob satterfield there isn’t much to go on. Unless losing to Terrell and drawing to Machen (after Ingo knocked him out) means much. there are certainly no signature one punch wins over contenders. and yet Williams later wins after his recovery from the Ali shellacking over Terry Daniels and Ted Gullick match anything Williams ever did before a police man shot him. so Williams really is not a great fighter. And Boxing news did pick Cokkell to win. Rex Layne did beat jersey joe Walcott and Nat Fleischer did talk of him as a future champion. These are the truth.
What about Boxing News? What about Jack Hurley? Cokkell was an underdog but so would have nino Valdez also have been an underdog.
In what era post-Marciano would Cokkel even be considered, upon talent and physical ability, a legit challenger to the heavyweight title? I think that is the greater point.
A lot probably. He was a good fighter. You don’t get to his level otherwise. But he probably never should have been ranked 2. And today he would be a cruiser (cruiser division wasn’t exactly over flowing w talent over the decades).
What about Terrell Liston Louis Machen Foreman Don't their opinions count? For the 4th time this thread . WHO HAS SAID WILLIAMS WAS A GREAT FIGHTER? More dishonesty! Williams was 31 when he was shot he came back at the age of 33 with a bullet lodged in him, his kidneys damaged and without the full use of one leg .His prime had gone,it would have been the two years he was out of the game.
No I think the greater point is why are all of Marciano's best opponents talked down by people talking up the likes of Cleveland Williams? Of all people.
Waiting for the David Bey and Carl Williams critics on these Holmes posts. Or maybe the great James Smith idk. Maybe we can do this with all the previous champs. Sure Wlad has a ton of great talent to choose from
I didn't expect you to apologize McVey but SEVERAL means more than a couple and more than a few - read the story - bottom line Big Cat overrated
