This is a complete tall tale by Moore. Marciano was not in any serious trouble, he was up at "2," there was no standing eight-count, and the pause after the knockdown was not significantly longer than normal.
Watch the tape. There was no standing eight count. There's maybe a two-second pause at most between the time Marciano gets up and the time they resume fighting. Nothing noticeably different from a typical knockdown. On Moore's television bio, his own friends and family admitted that this story was baloney and said he had "stretched a moment into an eternity in his mind" or somesuch. After the knockdown, Marciano resumes action more or less like nothing happened and wins the rest of the round. Even if the ref had let Moore stand over Marciano like Jack Dempsey, it still wouldn't have made a difference.
Well i'll be god damned. The version on YouTube doesn't show the count properly (goes to a Slow Mo of the KO itself) so i've been up in that ******* loft reeting through video tapes. It's not half as long as I was convinced it was, and I never remembered it as an 8 count to begin with. Naughty Archie Moore. At least I have my Marciano tapes in tow. About 2005 since I sat through all of these. Cute little KD though.
Just a stand up in 1 or 2 seconds If Moore ever really thought he had a chance in that fight his brains must have been pretty scrambled up by Rocky!
