Rocky Marciano KO's Bernie Reynolds In 3rd; Begins 30-Day Suspension

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — Heavyweight contender Rocky Marciano begins a 30-day ring suspension today after running his undefeated string to 40 bouts with a third-round knockout of Bernie Reynolds of Fairfield, Conn.

Marciano blasted out the former New England heavyweight titlist in 2:21 of the third of their scheduled 10-rounder last night to end a crowd-pleasing slugging match.

Reynolds stung the Brockton, Mass., belter several times and won the opening round handily, but a savage right hook to the chin made him Marciano's 35th knockout victim.

Marciano's suspension by the Maine Boxing Commission was imposed because he boxed his 19-year-old brother instead of the advertised opponents during a recent exhibition tour of Maine.

Rocky found Reynolds ready and willing to mix it up at Marciano's favorite slam-bang game and the Connecticut ex-soldier really landed some heavy punches before going down for keeps. Marciano weighed 186¼, Reynolds 185¼.

Reynolds crowded Rocky and made him miss. Twice in the session he caught Marciano with hard lefts to the jaw and although Rocky nailed him with a powerful right to the chin later it was Reynolds' round handily. Rocky hadn't lost a round in his last 20 Providence bouts.

Marciano hurt Reynolds with a terrific right uppercut to the chin in the second, but the Connecticut fighter jolted Rock with a heavy right hand to the jaw as they banged away.

Rocky worked on the body and then, just after Reynolds backed out of a clinch, Marciano threw a chilling right from his waist. The sock lifted Reynolds off the canvas and dumped him flat on his back.

It was Marciano's third knockout since he whipped Joe Louis in eight rounds last October. His showing, like his last outing in which he knocked out Gino Buonvino of Italy in two rounds, was a tremendous improvement over his sub-par performance while knocking out Lee Savold in six at Philadelphia.
