I hate how an excuse about a cold is used here. The commentator even says marciano could be stronger in a week's time. Rediculous. This is a sluggish performance plain and simple. Savold was tired looking too. Rocky lands a lot of telegraphed punches and misses more. Savold rides everything very well but does not look that ambitious.

Let's not forget that Marciano had received penicillin not to long before the fight because he had been sick that week...they asked if he wanted to postpone the fight...and Marciano said no...MAYBE the worst fight of his career...he took a LOT
of heat for his poor showing. Savold was pounded into a bloody pulp.

The Rock was only human after all. He was entitled to an off night now and then, as we all are. Its only the second time I have watched that fight, and yes, Marciano was well below par that day. Perhaps he was genuinely feeling ill?

Even without feeling ill some opponents turn up in sparring partner mode. The greatest fighter can always be made to look horrible. Incredibly difficult to nail a reluctant survivor with that kind of experience. I won't make an excuse for Rocky because everyone has this kind of thing happen. There dosnt really need to be an explanation.

    This,

that is precisely right, Bad night, flat performance, not up or properly motivate for God knows why, multiple reasons. and then of course just beat by a better man.

But your right there isn't always an explanation needed.

Savold was also in his 18th year or something too.

Dempsey was 21 when he lost to Flynn not 19. He would win the title just two years later

The difference between Marciano and Dempsey is Marciano on an off night he still wins every round and beats a journeyman to a bloody pulp while Dempsey Loses to a journeyman by knock out

Only Charles survived (the first time) and he did just barely. On film it may look like just another KO but i think if you were to witness it live it would become more obvious that he just pressures, pressures and pressures untill the other guy has no more. He is an animal.

I've recently rewatched his fights and aside from some technical things, the thing that became clear to me is how underrated his breaking-down factor is, and it's really easy to miss or underestimate because most people only see highlights/his goofyness, etc.

You just keep trying to convince yourself that if Marciano had lunged, swung wildly and missed like that against a prime Louis, and everyone from Liston to the brothers Klitchko, as opposed to an old washed up Savold, he wouldn't have been severely punished.

And I'll just keep laughing that anyone could be that soppy.

Very hard to hit Rocky since he was always ducking away after he missed a punch.

I suppose you could call falling over " ducking away " at a push.

Marciano swung and missed then fellover in at least 3 fights.
It was all part of a cunning plan to make him more elusive.:yep
