Oh yes I wasn't trying to slag Mares' ring IQ at all and don't think he'd necessarily be as seek-and-destroy against Rigondeaux, but was just pointing out that that strategy most likely wouldn't work. I likewise agree the fight certainly won't take place due to GB/TR.

I just have my doubts about Mares remaining a boxer-puncher the whole fight and can see Rigondeaux's timing giving him trouble from the outside or eventually becoming an issue when Mares does eventually stand pat. Again too bad we won't see it, or Mares-Donaire (at least until 2014) or Donaire-Moreno or Rigondeaux-Moreno.

Mares has looked above average to average in most of his fights. I don't see how, unless he gets the aid of Heredia can he possibly win impressively against a motivated Rigoho. You can bet your bottom dollar Rigo will be in the best shape of his life for this fight. Mares has shown me he is good but doesn't seem to have another gear in him.He has hit his ceiling in terms of what he can do in the ring.Mares is overrated!

    He doesn't.

I think it might be part of the amateur teaching in Cuba. Lara also doesn't have a very good right hook.

The only Cuban guy I can think of with a great hook is Gamboa, and honestly it was not what it should have been in his last fight.

In fact, Gamboa looked like ****. It's surprising because he has a big upside. Bad matchmaking too for a long lay off.

But yes, Rigo doesn't have a good, short, right hook.

    It's wide and sloppy.

He has a great jab, but without a solid right hook, he's essentially a one handed fighter.

All of his knockdowns have come with his left hand.

Sure, the last knockdown of Marroquin was finished with a right hand, but it wasn't a right hook.

It was more of a jab than anything. If it was a hook, Rigo would have won that fight by KO.

But yes, Rigo at this point in his career, does not have a good right hook. It's practically useless.

But that was a criticsm that Pacquaio got early in his career too. Now Pacquaio has one of the most devestating right hooks in boxing.

The problem is, Rigo is already 30 and he's not Pacquaio.

based on mares' last fight, he might be in trouble since rigo can actually punch. this is a pic-em fight for me.

Yeah that's what I meant, didn't mean easy but clearly & also don't' think cause he beat him clearly the first time that he'd do it just as clearly the again. It's the pros I understand but I still would give Rigo the edge.Race aside, still support La raza but got to recognize Rigo got mad skills If he can answer the chin questions he's on his way to elite.

Dude, Darchinyan can also punch and managed to score a knock down on him but Mares can't be stopped without knocking him out, cold.. :hey

You think Rigondeaux can knock him out? Or at least knock him down in more than 10 seconds? :think

then, you certainty need to read my posts again.
i know you get hurt when i complain about the way GBP handles Canelo, but 90% of ESB posters do that, sometimes i just joke around it.
But in Rigos case im only pushing for him against elite competition, one of them is your countryman Mares against who i see Rigo as a slightly favorite(60-40) and the poll indicates im not alone on my thoughts. The other one ,Nonito,i dont even have Rigo as a favorite, a 50-50 in my eyes.

Thats because Mares has been in with the top guys around his divison, has handled all sorts of styles with very difficult and ankward opponents....Put him up against shot to **** Arce, Teon Kennedy, Willie Casey, and past it Sidorenko and im sure he would look a whole lot more spectacular.

Besides, i thought he looked GREAT in the Agbeko rematch....where most of the forum were saying before the fight that Agbeko was gonna KO him. :hey

Mares looked better than ever and the Mares that faced Moreno you can bet is much better than the one that faced Darchinyan. Where Mares might not be as fast as Nonito, Rigo, or Moreno with handspeed, he makes up with his footwork, where he pounced on Moreno cutting the ring off very Duran-like. I think Mares is finally in his prime and by beating the highly regarded Moreno is easily on Nonito and Rigo's level. Just like stylistically the highly regarded counterpunchers are Mares's nightmare, Mares, who couldn't be contained by the superb Moreno, can also be a nightmare for Rigo or Nonito. The Mares that beat Anselmo Moreno can certainly beat Rigo and Nonito.

    Good points.
The rematch against agbeko was what sold me to Mares. He outboxed him with no problems after the controversy of their first fight. Then against Moreno he did exactly what he was suppose to do. Non stop pressure. By out boxing agbeko he showed he can box against an aggressive style, by rallying against Moreno he showed he can fight forward.
    Against rigo he's gonna have to use the Moreno strategy, and the question that remains is;
1- how will rigo handle that pressure
2-how will mares take rigos punches
I actually like this fight more than nonito vs rigo which can turn into a chess match( from an entertaining point of view)
