Can’t say I was blown away with his performance against a one armed fighter. This is the guy that people have been clamoring about being the next Pacquiao and yet he didn’t show anything that was impressive even with all the advantages he had last night. He was very fortunate that Russell was injured otherwise he would have lost quite easily IMO.

I’m quite shocked just how limited his skills really are, especially when he couldn’t do much at all in the later rounds against a fighter who had nothing to offer with one hand. Any other elite fighter would have taken full advantage of the situation, stepped up the gas, and ended the fight much earlier.

I don’t see Magsayo getting far in all honesty. Unless he makes some vast improvements on his skills he’s gonna get beat badly at some point. He’s nothing special and he’s certainly not the next big thing for Filipino boxing.

If Magsayo is nothing special, then what does that make Russell?

Hurt shoulder or not, Russell shouldn't have had as much trouble against Magsayo as he did.

Magsayo might be the worst champion in boxing today. He got a belt by a single round on one card against a guy who was physically unable to even jab with his lead arm. He struggled badly with Ceja who was smoked by a geriatric Rigondeaux at 122.

And you just know he'll avoid the rematch and never mention Russel's name again.

People are a bit too harsh on Magsayo IMO. Yes he was rather unimaginative in the second half of the fight and his suspect stamina came in effect, but he did show a good level of balance, composure and accuracy in the first five rounds. He is 26 years old and under the tutelage of Freddie Roach he is bound to improve.

We should be happy he finally got us rid of Gary Russell - the worst champion in boxing, and gave the featherweight division a breath of fresh air. Marky Mark vs the likes of Figueroa, Navarrete, Lara, Warrington, Conlan and Santa Cruz would be absolutely stellar. :chuck:

First the scorecards were ridiculous, not even the other 14 Gary Russells had their namesake brother winning. Second Julio Ceja is a strong, rugged ex champ who was ahead before getting stopped, albeit controversially by Rigogoblin.

    Pure fantasy.

Btw a draw is all that's needed to retain a title.

Literally NO ONE said he was going to be the next Pacquiao. And there was/is no indication that he's going to be elite/future HOF/future ATG that is usually bestowed upon a hot-looking up and comer.

That said, he is very limited, though. He's got good pop and I like how he goes to the body. He's still green, but he better fix his stamina/conditioning, which looks be to crap. His punches were losing steam from the 5th round up.

Haney is a paper champion. Magsayo has a legit belt and defeated the longest reigning beltholder in boxing.

Mark Magsayo may well be 'nothing special', but he was good enough to beat Russell Jr.
Is Gary's arm to blame for his chin in the early rounds? Was Magsayo to blame for Russell Jr's excuses leading into the fight?

This is the same Russell Jr that said he'd KO Lomachenko in a rematch?

This I agree with. He has time to grow into his style. His idol was really shabby too but then he went on to become a legend. We expect too much nowadays.

Basically, I'll respect him if he rematches Russel, win or lose.

Makes him the most inactive champion of the last decade perhaps.

I like this kid as he reminds me of Maidana before he got the tutor and training from Garcia. I think he will need to matched carefully for his next fight as he continues to work on his footwork and polishing up on his punches

I think Roach isn't the right trainer for Magsayo. He just doesn't look like he has improved at all.

I missed most of the fight to watch that Ufc crap of a main event fight between ngannou and Gane but from what i did see Magsayo looked the same as always. Hes not the best guy in the division imo, but he would make great fights with any of the top guys at 126 pounds. I think a fight with Navarrette would be a war, and i also think Navarrette stops him as well if they fight anytime soon.

Didn't see the fight. Was Russell basically one armed?
