Nobody wants to see a 5th fight and fans over emphasize how well Manny was doing. Manny looked really great, but people act like that 6th round right hand is the only shot Manny took. He was the first to get dropped in that fight, and hard.

    I agree.

Similar even though Floyd Mayweather defated Robert Guerrero, I still have Yoshihiro Kemgai KOing Floyd.

This thread is about Mayweather and Pacquiao. It should be reported and all 65 pages moved to the single thread reserved for that discussion.

Sup everybody. This thread was the very beginning for a lot of thoughts I've had over the years about this match-up. Now that the fight is finally here, I present my video detailing the theories originally behind this thread.

good ****ysis, i agree with a lot of it but you are also surprisingly omitting a more obvious difference in mindset. Marquez takes A LOT more risks than Floyd, A LOT more risks. Your ****ysis is a good technical ****ysis but it's almost like you rushed past basics and into more intricate technical differences. Stepping back a little, JMM is a risk taker who is willing to trade punches with Manny. To employ the strategies you point out, requires JMM to willingly trade and knowingly risk getting hit. Whilst he has given Pacquiao problems, Pacquiao has also given him a lot of problems. They have landed big shots against each other regularly evidenced by 7 knock downs shared between them. The dynamics of their battles are as much risk taking as it is smart technical strategies. Both take deliberate risks and employ a strategy of winning by attrition; i.e., JMM thinks he will get the better opportunities to connect (using some of the strategies you mention) but knows he's getting hit.

So stepping back, before even getting into the nuances, strategic and technical differences between Floyd and JMM, there are larger differences in mental approach. JMM is a risk taking aggressive counterpuncher whilst Floyd Mayweather is a cautious defensive counterpuncher.

Thanks, and I agree with you. The philosophies are fundamentally different. Marquez is a risk-taker, Floyd is very risk-averse. Both have their benefits and drawbacks. Marquez is more offensively creative, Floyd is more defensively sound. I think some would say Floyd might be able to fight Pacquiao without taking those risks and getting knocked down, the question is whether or not that enables Pacquiao.

Honestly, i think it's almost impossible to beat Pacquiao being too defensive. This will be Floyd's problem. Pacquiao has lost 5 times, 1 was a robbery so ****yzing the other 4, 3 came via KO and the other by an aggressive Erik Morales. Defensive fighters have a slim chance against Pacquiao. Clottey tried it and won 0 rounds, Algieri tried it and won 0 rounds. Floyd is the best at defense but if he fights too defensively, he will surely lose.

I believe Floyd and his camp know Floyd's best chance is to stop Manny. Roy Jones and Teddy Atlas think the same, that Floyd won't win by being defensive.

I like your technical breakdown. I do believe JMM is more versatile than Floyd during exchanges, he can read punches better and counter more effectively in the heat of exchanges. Floyd is more of a defensive fighter who doesn't like to trade punches - he pot shots, counters and retreats. JMM stays in the line of fire but knows how to handle it better. He takes risks though, that 4th fight could've easily been a TKO by Manny. As a JMM fan, you must admit that was a rather reckless move by Manny, looking for a KO. It worked well for JMM but he gambled on it.. bets don't always pay off.

I do very much like your view on the subject, and you have written your views very well, but seeing the difference between May vs pac, and Marquez vs Pac has to be used as evidence.

I understand how Floyd and Marquez`s styles are totally different, but IMO the reason why I feel Marquez troubles Pac is down to his brain. For me Marquez has done so well vs Pac because he relies on his brain, and not athleticism.

Floyd is a much smarter version of Marquez, with freakish athleticism. These two things combined are the reason why I pick Floyd to win comfortably.

I see Floyd trying a range of different tactics until he finds one that Pac cant beat, and cant adapt to.

Its not about him having to be like Marquez to beat Pac. Its about him using one of his own styles (he has many), and making it work.

Personally I actually think he is going to walk Pac down to make Pac fight In a way that he doesn't like to. Pac likes to dictate the distance and speed of the fight with this in and out style. No ones been able to pressure Pac because he likes to pressure himself, and I feel this will be enough to get him off of his usual fight pattern.

    Just my thoughts.
