Sometimes the more skilled boxer does better in the rematch, as they are more versatile, when it comes to adapting their gameplan based on what did and didn't work in the first fight. Chavez would throw more punches in a rematch but he would leave himself open more for Sergios Martinez to land. He needs to plant his feet to get power in his shots and Martinez doesn't give him many chances to do that. Late rounds against Chavez are always going to difficult though for Martinez as he has to use up so much energy to move around. And that gaves Chavez a chance for late round stoppage. Still would favour Martinez though,
There is absolutely no need for a rematch just because he dropped Sergio in the 12th. For 11 Rounds It was a drubbing Chavez got a bit of luck in the 12th because he was desperate and knew he had to stop Martinez. I feel re-match would go the same way Chavez couldn't handle the speed and footwork of Martinez. If anything in a re-match I would feel Martinez would stop him or even his corner will pull him out,
Chavez is never going to beat Martinez. Only reason there was a knockdown was because Martinez stood flat footed and traded for the last 1:30 of the fight. Chavez has nothing but size. He lost just about every second of every round. Should there have been a rematch between Calzaghe and Jeff Lacy? atsch
Wow, two logical fightfans surrounded by 20 blind DKSAB haterz. Pretty bad that DKSAB haterz outnumber fightfans on a boxing board.:rofl If the haterz didnt see Chavez having success with his jab when he threw it, they DKSAB. If they didnt see Martinez leaving himself open to the R hand from the first rd on, they DKSAB. If they didnt see Chavez having success digging to the body when he was able to cut off the ring, they DKSAB. When you watch a fight, blindly hating one of the guys, you aint gonna see the others successes. Therefore, YDKSAB. Chavez JR was abso****inglutely out of his league in there, and had NO idea when to let his shots go. Now that he knows he'll lose 100/99 times looking for a hail mary, he'll either let his hands go or get mopped again. The kid has heart and a chin and some power. Those are some key ingredients of a champion. If he let's it all hang out, EARLY, he can slow Martinez down earlier, and catch him earlier, and stop him in a rematch. He really needs better coaching and to train harder for the kindof fight he's gonna need to fight against the type of fighter Martinez is. He needs a sprring partner like Proska for a full camp, so he can work on his defensive cutting off without taking punches in the process. And there will defo be a rematch if Sergio can't get a Floyd, Canelo or Cotto fight. He's too smart to fight GGG for short money, Pirog and Geale don't generate the kindof $$$ he needs to retire comfortably either, so the rematch will likely happen when he's healed up, with or without tuneups.
Since when does a single knockdown in a fight deserve a rematch? You get an extra point,not5 points for a knockdown. It was not remotely a close fight no matter what Chavez fanboys claim. Next fight will be exactly the same-a 154 pound champion beating the **** out of a 180 pound challenger.
Great analysis! But there is one thing people forget about, Martinez can't unify or he will be stripped from the WBC belt which I assume Suleiman will be waiting for any little excuse to do it.
Whilst I enjoyed the fight alot, it would have been alot more exciting if chavez wasn't so carefull. He wasn't getting his punches off. Hopefully in the rematch he throws alot more punches. Doing that will mean two things. He KO's Martinez. Or more likely, Martinez stops Chavez. But it also means a more exciting fight.
Why are you people afraid of a rematch? A 12 round like that deserved another... Heck, even Sexyserge is willing to do another! Both can rake a couple mil from it from the Mex market.
I will say this, I thought Chavez Jr. looked nervous going into the fight and if that is the case, it could have been part of the problem why he couldn't get off. Now of course the main reason could have just been that Sergio was to fast, to agile, to ferocious with his combinations that it made Chavez freeze in his tracks. Or maybe it was both with the first one leading to another. Either way, as long as Sergio can recover from his injuries properly (which is no guarantee at his age), and he can get himself up again and not think this fight will be easy....he could also go on and destroy Chavez because if Chavez decides to let his hands go, that's when Sergio has found his ability of power to go up because he catches you when you are throwing and when you least expect it. He counters quite well. You also have to think that Sergio could also now adapt his style to coast more and not go all out all the time like he did. Which means, it could just be even harder for Chavez. And going back to the knock-down, remember, Sergio was already tired by then, possibly injured with his knee, and next time, could decide to just avoid all contact with Chavez and use more defense. The speed difference was far apart. So for the rematch? I would rather him fight someone else at MW or get a big name opponent like Alvarez, Cotto, etc.
Weren't you hating on Martinez before the fight saying how when he gets KOd by Chavez. Proska and many others could beat him?
He will get his ass whooped even worse. The more he will throw the more his face will take punishment.
