Yeah if he didnt have heart then Taylor would have had him outta there, he was on ***** street big time in the 1st fight
I don't think Sergio would have given away rounds on purpose, seeing as how worried he seemed that might get robbed. I think he probably did take it a bit easier in the middle rounds as a tactic so he could finish strong, knowing that judges tend to score what they remember best, or what they last saw.
If you look at the replay, Pavlik actually leaned and pushed Martinez' head down and then cracked him on top of the head as Martinez was trying to pull out of Pavllik's arm on top of his head. .......that was not a legit knockdown. I did'nt have a rooting interest in this fight, and to me it looked like Martinez consciously slowed the pace of the fight down to ensure he'd have energy against the bigger Pavlik down the stretch...... .....I highly doubt the intent of Martinez was to give Pavlik a false sense of security before stepping it up and attacking late in the fight...... ....it just turned out that it worked that way. Pavlik had sucess in the mid rounds because the pace having slowed down allowed him to use his reach to jab at Martinez and keep him at distance. .....as soon as Martinez made a conscious effort from the 9th round to the 12th to up the pace, and give Pavlik the angles he was doing early on, Pavlik was just clueless as to how to stop the flow of incoming.
he def did watch the hopkins-pavlik fight cuz sergio did that whole windin up his left hand i believe like hopkins (bhop did it with his right i think) vs pavlik. i think it was mockin kelly tryin to remind him of the hopkins fight.
I'm pretty sure his cornerman has an eye problem. Those look like specialty sunglasses. Notice how they wrap all the way around his eyes.
After the fight he should've told Kelly to bend his knees and get that slickness, like a Latin fighter.
Whatever the translation is, it still holds true that Martinez did change gears in the latter rounds, and threw flurries which he didn't much do in the early stages. There were many times in the late rounds when I thought if he just kept on throwing he'd have Pavlik out of there since KP wasn't or couldn't throw anything back - something he was at least able to do in the middle rounds. Great performance by Martinez. Joy to watch.
That's just a ****ing stupid strategy. You shouldn't let anybody gain confidence, also, hasn't he learned his lesson about giving away "pity rounds" he was robbed against Cintron, and lost close to Paul Williams. ****ing moron. I hope Paul does give him a rematch, and Paul beats the **** out of this *****.
I think it's because of his moviestar good looks, and because he's Latino, with Latino machismo and he speaks in spanish. (anything sounds cool in spanish) If a goofy looking asian boxer says all of that in broken english, he would be crucified by many boxing fans.
Martinez is a humble guy and only knows a few words of english, i can assure you the translation is a little different from what he meant, he would never want to give Pavlik confidence
