I saw Peter two weeks ago at the Taylor/Pavlik weigh-in and while I didn't think he looked fat at the time he looked to have a gut. He didn't attend the fight, but he wasn't hard at training either as it was early in the day.
I agree with this. Maybe thats why Oleg is coming in a bit heavy. To provde more bang on his right hand. I hope it works. Hell, even Golota was 238 last outting & he's an inch taller & has a thicker trunk than Maskaev. Could Oleg have had a weak training camp? Probably not. He's not stupid & knows what he's up against. When your fighting a tank, you need to be in a tank, too. :!: Tank You!
Maskaev is not Toney so I wouldn't make much out of nothing here. They got as trim as possible with the second Toney fight because they came to the realization that they needed speed and longevity over rounds. I would have liked to see Sam at 245 too but the way they do business now is by boxing and taking time to land the right hand. It isn't like before the Waldo fight where they just went crazy in there from the opening bell. But don't worry. This fight should still be 10x more interesting than that farce last weekend. And Maskaev is way too heavy. If that +300 looks good to you then handing Maskaev your paycheck must look good too. Looks to me he came to take a dive.
Maskaev's weight seems fine. He's been 243 before. Peter should be no more than 245 -he was 243 against Wlad. However, he has been 250 in his last fights.
Anything below 250 for Peter is a heroism I guess. So this wieght is very good for him. I did not expect that much from Maskaev.
All along I've been expecting a desultory performance from Maskaev, who would fight defensively and simply give up rounds to try and catch Peter late. In other words, a repeat of the most recent Rahman fight. Oleg would't want to engage Peter early, and he can't fight hard for 12 rounds. My hope was that Peter would train hard to prove that the McCline fight was a fluke, and now this? There's no way he's in top shape at 250. No excuses. Maskaev actually could take this (probably awful) fight by decision, and I didn't think that was likely at all previously. ****ing heavyweights.
With these characters and weights, this is going to be a very ugly fight. Expect Peter to jab his way in and Maskaev to counter-jab in very slow mode and straightforward fashion - once they get inside the distance, nobody has room to punch and at most, they'll do some holding and rabbit punching at that close range. They can't possibly give a lot of angles to it and show a great variety of punches so it's a stupid heavyweight fight with the first man to get hurt, losing the damned fight... Of course, Maskaev doesn't have the activity levels to offset, upset or keep a massive thick meat ball from breaking his way in.
I want to like Peter, but I see more old people at my gym that probably do more running than Peter does. Despite his weight, he should beat Oleg.
Maskaev will win a decision or late TKO over a very winded Peter. Everyone knows that Peter's mythical power is just that, MYTHICAL. Maskaevs straight right/ left hook combo he used succesfully against Rahman wil be Peter's undoing.
