No film on Corbett but he might be slick enough to get the job done. A motivated Baer catches him though.
Baer knocks Corbett back into his century. Also what are you talkign about there is footage of the man, tho not the greatest quality.
That´s a great fiight. Baer could be outboxed and Corbett apparently was a great boxer. Comparable to Tunney. Baer has the stamina to hang in right to the end though. Tough to pick.
Not made a pick , but perhaps on the basis that Corbett beat a 36 years old drink sodden Sullivan, who had not fought in nearly 5 years, defended against middleweight Charlie Mitchell, then drew with light heavyweight Sharkey before being kod by middleweight Fitzsimmons, then in his next fight was beaten by light heavy Sharkey. Ending his career with 11 wins out of 21 fights. Maybe that is the reasoning behind the comment.??????
No, but you are focusing on the negatives, without refference to how they would translate int a win for Baer, and overlooking the positives.
Straight up, corbett is my pick for worst h2h fighter out of anyone who's ever been hw number 1. A master boxer of his time, granted, and a deserved great, but nothing on film convinces me he'd beat anyone, in their prime, that either followed or preceded him.
This is a quite extroardinary statment. This is a fighter who was close to never having been down on the cards against anybody in his entire career. If your assesment of him based on the available film is that he was the weakest lineal champion, and would loose to anybody before or after him, then the inevitable conclusion has to be that your assesments of fighters based on film are unreliable.
Negatives? If I wanted to portay him negatively, I might point out, he was kod by a middleweight with a body shot, how often have you seen a heavyweight champ succumb like that? I haven't picked, but I might say Corbett ,[ if I wanted to be negative,] never met a 6'3" 210lbs powerhouse who could punch like a horse kicking, a man with a great chin, a man who killed at least one man with his fists. Or, I might say Corbett only faced 5 heavyweights, and only beat 3 of them. I might say that he ducked Peter Jackson ,when he himself was in his prime , that he ducked Fitz for a while until Fitz kod Maher in 1 rd and forced Corbett's return to the ring out of embarrassment. Alternatively I might say that he is widely believed to have participated in a fixed fight with Kid McCoy. That his second Con McVey jumped into the ring to cause a dsq and ,save him from an imminent stoppage against Sharkey. Or ,that his old manager Jim Brady said Corbett wanted to fight Champion Johnson, if Johnson would take it easy on him for a few rounds ,and allow him to make a respectable showing ,[and also a respectable purse.] If I was negative towards James J Corbett, I might say any or all of those things.:deal
