Spinks was a very good light heavyweight...but I was very surprised that he beat Holmes in the 1st fight...I do not think Spinks was a very good heavyweight...he beat Cooney but so did an older Foreman in 2...I watched that fight expecting an easy win for Holmes but Spinks surprised me and landed a lot of hooks and right hands on Larry from odd angles...but Spinks did not have the speed or Heavyweight power of a Page or Dokes or Thomas....just a great lightheavy carrying extra cargo
The right will land, that much is certain. It cannot be reiterated enough times-- Max Schmeling possessed one of the sneakiest single shots in the history of the heavyweight division. The problem is, against Holmes' superior bulk, this will be like running into a brick wall. Once Max fires his straight, Larry will almost certainly clinch, and then he'll just brutalize the German with uppercuts inside.
We have to remember it's all relative too. Spinks beat a terrible version (overconfident, underprepared, aged etc) of Holmes in the first fight and could not handle a better but still way past it version in the rematch. Larry would have been noticably better at the time he would have fought Page and Dokes and definitely more motivated and respectful of Thomas at whatever time. Good fights.
