Then why did he get caught trying to load his gloves against an ageing Mosley? Logic dictates that he used the same trick against Cotto, a man who had already beaten Mosley. The Cotto v Margarito fight was bigger than Margarito v Mosley. A few observers have stated that the damage Cotto took to his face is one of the worst instances in prize fighting....
Absolutely. It had nothing to do with his extra-ordinary ability to take punches, his ability to throw inordinate amounts of punches without running out of steam, or his physical stature. Just the "cement".
I've heard the theory before because even though it gets looked over due to what happened to Cotto...Margarito took a beating in that fight as well. I don't really subscribe to that thought though. Margarito was made for Mosley and Mosley took full advantage....he may be shot now after that beating.
Yes I was a fan. I was amazed at his power. He also had a great chin, but he tried to cheat. He was caught cheating and was subsequently disgraced. In a brutal sport such as boxing, attempting to load you gloves is inexcusable.
You are taking the semantics a little too far here. I've referred to it as "Manos de Piedra" but we all know that it was some kind of plaster. Dude stop.
I think to exaggerate to such an extent is in bad taste, and the word cement is usually only uttered by those who had no time for Antonio Margarito from the start.
The knee jerk reaction that you get on forums to be fair (the same knee jerk that had some people on here saying he could beat hearns after cotto if i remember correctly). He took insane punishment against shane before going down, his chin is very good. As for the wrappings part of me can see where your coming from. Against cotto etc he took some amount of punishment and kept coming and his workrate was as good as any fighter and when he got inside he was pretty effective. He certainly had some talent irrespective of wraps. But then i look at cotto after the margarito fight and just think he was cheating at the very least in that fight
Utter poppycock. It's a turn of phrase and you are looking too far into it. Do you think people who say "that guy looks like he is shitting bricks" actually mean it literally? :roflatsch
As an expert on Chins, I will say that Cotto's punch resistance had been Shattered before the Pacquiao fight. The Pacquiao fight was never competitive. It was an easy night for Pacquiao and I predicted it beforehand. Cotto was ruined by Margarito. Cotto was an elite level fighter before that fight, now he is all but shot. That only strengthens my suspicions that Margarito cheated in that fight.
What did you see in Miguel Cotto's performance against Margarito that you didn't see in his fight with Pacquiao? In both instances he was doing well in the early goings, I had him winning the rounds he was knocked down in. It stands to reason that a fighter like Manny Pacquiao, who is much more talented, dynamic, and better than Antonio Margarito, would get to Miguel in double quick time. It was the same Cotto as I had always seen, he was just bettered.
I find it offensive in this case, it's a sensitive issue. As long as you are factor in this thread, you'll be forced to tolerate my semantics. What credentials would one need to be considered an expert on chins, anyhow?
Losing to the best fighter on the planet and now he's a shot item? It's often forgotten, but through five rounds, Pacquiao vs Cotto was back and forth.
Listen, I'm not going to adhere to some petty rule of semantics. This is an open forum and I shall continue to post the way I have always done, i.e. intelligently and coherently. To answer your question, I am a proud member of the unofficial Chin Checkers outfit, who operate on ESB. Fellow posters such as Rico Spadafora, Zakman, yesihavearm2, Anglosaxon and HEADBANGER, amongst others, can testify to this.
