The thing is he is still in his prime. He has still not even come close to lossing aside from Castillo but that was a long time ago. Cotto vs Floyd could be such an epic fight and any real boxing fan would be more than satisfied with Floyd if he were to pull a great win on Cotto and retired. I don't see how any one could obviously ***** about Floyd not fighting any other individuals like PW Marg or Berto, none of them are proven and on the same level as Cotto. Cotto has proven and showed to the world that he belongs in the same ring as Floyd Mayweather, the others haven't. Thats what sets this fight apart - the build up is already there! For them to let this mega match fall through their fingers is F'n weak!
We both totally agree here and that's a fight I'm literally begging for, something tells me it will happen but let's wait and see. But back to the point as we both agree many others don't especially when the Margarito case is still going, Paul Williams was mentioned, Hatton was mentioned coutless times before he got to him, Manny Pacquiao was mentioned, hell Vernon Forrest and Cory Spinks were mentioned...etc, the names will keep coming regardless of what both you and I think. *EDIT: As far as being too young to retire, he has done far too much in boxing to NOT consider retirement. You would work for 15 years somewhere and will lose motivation and eventually retire sooner or later, this man has been doing this ever since he was a baby, from amateur to professional. It's only logical he would get bored, if others didn't then it's no surprised he's different, not all people are the same.
I agree, boxing is mentally draining and being in it your whole life is rough expecially when you're the #1 fighter the pressure exceeds your desire to carry its weight. But its sad to see that a fighter like Mayweather with a foot in the retirement window, you'd think he'd be on such an emotional psychological high that he'd be so amped to take on a guy like Cotto. The only thing that shows is that he may be emotionally/psychologically spent. But at the same time I find that extremely hard to believe because he was chasing down big money fights with DLH and Hatton and then calls it quits when still big time money can be made. lol, when Vernon Forrest was mentioned to Floyd after one of Floyd's fight I lmfao @ Floyd's reaction..."Vernon Forrest? Who the hell is vernon forrest don't no body give a damn about Vernon forrest he doesn't mean anything"...At least something to those lines...LMAO.... No body means anything to Floyd BUT Cotto, only reason why? Is because he presents massive competition. omg I want this fight so bad, I am a massively huge Cotto fan but in all I just want to see an Epic fight. Looking back at when Floyd was letting the smaller Jesus Chavez swing away and he was just shoulder rolling and picking him off with right uppercuts. Imagine a risky gutsy performance by Floyd Mayweather like that him getting beat up pretty bad by Cotto but some how pulling off a great great epic win? How could ANY Floyd fan NOT want to see that happen? I'd love for Floyd to get his ass handed to him, but if I saw Floyd pull some type of **** like that against Cotto my jaw would drop.
Totally agree with you here, hoping it would happen too. What an event this would be and the discussions will be rolling like never before. Glad to see Mayweather throw in an interview there, at least a great sign he still has his eyes on boxing and a possibility of returning for this fight is not totally out of the question.
thats funny because forrest and spinks are two fighters that if they were on top of their game would give floyd hell... especially forrest
Good columnist David Mayo of the Grand Rapids press ... Floyd won't be back ... unless he can secure a big money fight against Pacquiao ... because unlike DLH and Hatton there aren't any other stars that can produce numbers and the same marketability --
His big money fight will be with Cotto. Pac is to small and hasn't proven anything at the 140+ weight. It all depends on what happens this July. Back on topic. If he thinks HBO is picking on him he's full of ****. Kellerman talks about PBF so much you'd think he wante dto have his baby. The other guys on HBO and many other media have been critical of his Baldo, bruesseles, DLH, Zab, and Gatti fight. Just look at the names of his last 5 fights. What a pathetic list. Thats what the HBO crew was critical about. But they sure as hell praised him as one of the best boxer ever.
We'll see what the number do in ... Margarito v Cotto ... if he doesn't reach 100k buys then you can count Cotto out of the picture. Just like DLH said ... if Cotto wins thats fine, but its about the numbers ... He max 350k buys against Mosley ... he did 250k against Judah ... and he did less than 100k against Malignaggi on TopRanks PPV card in association w/ Showtime. And he had one of the worst ratings on World Championship Boxing on HBO against Alphonso Gomez. He's not a big star outside of NY/NJ area and PR ... it shows in the numbers ... he's not a big draw and thats one thing that hurt him in gaining a fight w/ Mayweather. Mayweather did 350k w/ Gatti, Judah, and Baldomir ... he did over 1m against Hatton and over 2m against DLH ... Those are numbers and you see what all those guys did outside of fighting Mayweather and what they did before Mayweather.
i think cotto - margarito will break at the very least 300 k ppv buys, in account of the latino viewers. if HBO promotes it like they did for hatton/dlh - mayweather 500 k buys is a very reachable # considering the fight promises to be a war.
Heres the thing - the ONLY way Floyd vs Cotto happens... 1) Is if Pacquiao neglects to go above 140lbs and Floyd rules out making 140lbs to fight Pacquiao which could hurt him considering he most likely would never want to make that weight again. He has filled out a lot by fighting above 147lbs. 2) Cotto beats Margarito impressively, then beats DLH the fight does great PPV buys, and does so impressively as well. 3) See by doing so he'd be possibly if he does "Destroying" two mexican fighters. What that does is actually gets a Mexican following for Cotto. Most people don't realize that, but an example of this is Trinidad and DLH, the reality is that when fighters with huge fan bases collide they mutually interchange fans, DLH fans most likely ended up buying Tito fights after their big fight: and Tito fans most likely ended up buying DLH fights after their big fight. Thats how it works, So If Pac were to rule out fighting Floyd and does what most hardcore boxing fans want him to do and cleans out 135lbs and maybe moves up to 140lbs after then Floyd is out of a date with Pac. If Cotto pwns 2 mexican fighters, the #'s for Cotto vs Mayweather would be off the charts.
I wish but i'm not going to bet on that ... if I had to guess, I would go with 250k buys ... Margarito isn't a big draw and doesn't have a big fan base ... not even a big Mexican fan base ... he can't even headline a venue or a televised fight card. His fight against Paul Williams had to be co-headlined w/ Gatti and Cintron ... they barely had 5,000 fans in that arena. He co-headlined with Cotto on the worst rated WCB card ... These guys aren't big draws ... like I said before Cotto's best was against Mosley who has a big name in the boxing world and it couldn't even get past 350k buys. I don't think it would be promoted that well ... you see the promotion of the Pacquiao v Diaz fight was promoted poorly ... Cotto isn't that big of a star. If you reach Cali (Margarito) ... NY/NJ (Cotto) ... PR (Cotto) and Mexico (neither) ... it will not reach that many viewers. Not many Mexicans are behind Margarito like they are w/ Marquez -
It sounds like he is hyping a fight up against pac, I will be pissed if he comes back to boxing ducks Cotto to fight pac...
Floyd maxes out at 153 ... walking around ... So you think that Mayweather v Pac is a strong possiblilty given the amount of money to be made? Cotto v Margarito would have to do big numbers for him to even get a fight w/ DLH add to that he would have to win impressivley. You also have to remember that Pac has a strong Mexican following as well as his Phillipino following ... add to that his huge California and Phillipines fan base. You would also have to factor in Bob Arum and Mayweather's relationship with TopRank. Mayweather doesn't want Arum to make any more money off of him.
Why would he duck Cotto? ... Cotto hasn't did anything to get ducked ... and i'm sure if he were to fight Pac the numbers would be off the charts.
He ain't fighting PAC or anyone. He just misses the attention. Pac's team isn't stupid enough to have him fight Floyd anytime soon. Let see what Pac does at 135 and maybe 140 before we even mention Pac fighting anyone at 147 let alone Floyd. As for floyd, he can't act, sing, or do anything else but fight. He miss the sports and in trying to get the spot light he just makes an ass out of himself by useing the race card. Emanuel Stewart is one of the broadcaster for **** sake.
