Mayweather/McGregor Fight Discussion

Maybe. If Floyd thinks that he might be able to sell a rematch he might let McGregor land a few shots and make it interesting, but it would be really tough for Floyd to let McGregor make it close enough without it being more of a farce than it already is

 

It's called an upset and it happens all the time. If you've been watching boxing for 50 years then you already know this. Cotto wasn't supposed to knockout Martinez. He was supposed to get demolished in one round. But Martinez was old and carried injuries into the ring. Same deal with Haye vs Bellew. Haye had an injury and went ahead with the fight anyway.

That's the most probable way for McGregor to win the fight: Mayweather being old and injured. I can also see a victory by way of disqualification, by uncalled fouls, or cuts. Also, McGregor always has a puncher's chance. Last but not least, Mayweather may decide to take a dive. I can see him using some front men to make bets for him and losing the fight on purpose.

I don't watch Floyd fights, but I'll troll Sherdog when McGregor loses.

 

Never. Floyd would NEVER do that. He puts too much pride in his aura of invincibility, in being "TBE". The appeal of beating Marciano's "record" would be too great. He loves money, but he wouldn't throw all of that away for another $10 million, $20 million or even $50 million. The payday from the fight itself would be more than enough.

 

Sometimes it's hard to tell what he likes the most: bragging that he's the best, making money, or trolling everybody.

 

For a man who has watched boxing since the 60's he sure seems very dismissive of floyd. I think the hatreded floyd gets sometimes is more just aimed at the whole of modern boxing but people seem to use him as the sole target of it.

I follow both sports and I am much more of a boxing fan. I can't believe anyone here would want McGregor to win. He's more of an a$$ than Mayweather and he represents a totally different sport. He doesn't care about the sport of boxing, he's trying to make a few quick bucks just like Mayweather. McGregor has gotten many unearned shots at the UFC title and has had some shaky fights againsts fighters that deserve rematches. McGregor isn't even the best UFC fighter, why does he deserve a fight against Mayweather? He doesn't.

Mayweather may be an dick, but at least he loves boxing and it shows in his craft. The best outcomes for this fight would be for Mayweather to demolish McGregor and for the PPV numbers to flop. It would hopefully humble both, McGregor for thinking he can take on the best boxer, and Mayweather for thinking he can hoodwink a bunch of casual fans out of their money.

 

I hope after this fight that his next trip is to the Bay area or Houston so J Prince guys can whoop him and his securities ass in a proper manner. He has been campaigning for a good ole Death Row Records era beating by a large group of gentlemen with African ancestry.

 

I am going to laugh my head off if Conor throws a knee or an elbow and connects for a DQ. The howling from fanboys will be great.

 

No it's not impossible, he always has a chance no matter how small it is. But if he did get the win he would instantly become the best fighter of all time it's acually that hard to do what he's trying to do.

OK, let's try a simple thought experiment.

If boxing > MMA as a fighting discipline, then WHY do MMA fighters go to allllll the expense and trouble of learning wrestling, grappling, thai boxing, judo IN ADDITION to boxing?

They could just do boxing, and be done with it. Yeah?

In fact it would be much more efficient. They could spend all their time on the really effective art and be so much better. Right?

BUT.

But the fact is that pure boxing in isolation is NOT better than a blend of wrestling/boxing/grappling.

It's been proven, over and over again. Sure, the pure boxer always has a chance. But I have seen sooooo many matches where the boxer/kickboxer gets taken down in about 5 seconds a la James Toney like a chump, and it's just awful to watch them spaz out in panic while the jiujitsu guy wraps them up like a damn anaconda and chokes them TFO.

There was actually an exhaustive study done on grappling/wrestling vs boxing, in the form of a book, and the odds are about 3-1 in the favour of the wrestler in a fight. Damned if I can find the thing now, though. Go figure.

What boxing is, is a very good base to transition into MMA from. There are several very successful MMA fighters that started off as boxers (eg, Mirko Filipovic) but they did have to learn actual takedown defence (jumping over a guys back, is not takedown defence) and grappling to be effective.

 

If I were Conor, I would try to dislocate Floyd's arm/shoulder during every clinch (we know Floyd will clinch at least 75X).
