McCallum vs Hearns at 154

LOL, I thought I saw Roy Jones Jr being compared/mentioned in the same sentence as primed 154lbs Hitman Hearns...:scaredas:

That said, I agree with the sentiment, I cannot see even Tommy stopping McCallum.

 

What? Roy Jones was a very, very dangerous puncher up to LHW. If McCallum can withstand his bombs at 175, he can withstand Hearns' at 154.

I also think there's a very decent argument to have Jones ahead of Hearns in ATG rankings, but that's another debate.

 

I'll take Tommy on points, but give McCallum a decent chance of ending it suddenly like the Curry fight. Well, even in that fight, McCallum was doing some subtle work which set up the "sudden" ending. Tommy's best defense was his considerable offense. Tommy by decision (but I think McCallum would get one in a trilogy).

RJJ is overall, comparable to Tommy, but not in the right hand power department.

 

Fair enough. Hearns terrific right hand would spell stylistical problems for Mike. No doubt. Perhaps it would be the deciding factor.

 

If Hearns started fast and landed cleanly with right hands, he has a damn good chance of putting McCallum out. Otherwise, McCallum's defensive abilities come into play. If he slips and counters to Tommy's ribs, consistently, he'll wear Hearns down late.

Just 4 out of 15 on McCallum. All wrong.

 

Roy was not a big puncher at 175. He went the distance several times. He didn't even go for the knockout against McCallum, only knocking him down and letting him go the distance. Hearns went for knockouts more than Roy, although he exposed his chin more. But when he was younger he was not as reckless as post Hagler. Thing is I think he was more effective pre Hagler so it didn't look like recklessness.

 

Tommy wouldn't get caught like Curry did. Not in that manner. Curry really went down because he was the smaller guy.

 

This breakdown is exactly how I see it. Either man could pull of a tight decision win IMO.

 

Well I wouldn't say that, although he did let McCallum go the distance in the fight. Very insignificant win I must say.

Anyways besides Telesco, Tarver and Del Valle. Jones managed to KO/TKO or knockdown his opponent other than those three at Light Heavy.

At Light Heavy Jones was a dangerous puncher when he wanted to be.

I agree. Mccrory is a better comparison. A guy with reach and good legs, but not a brilliant defense on closer quarters.

 

a very cool fight indeed hearns by pts decision for me but he needs to keep it a distance fight and win behind his jab
