IMO Medley totally froze up under the pressure of the big night. I cant believe he didnt let his hands go, then when he punched on in the 12th he won the round, and it almost looked like if he fought more rounds like the 12th he could have won. I was screaming punch more punch more, but he kinda looked scared. But maybe he will be back better than ever. Oh Medley chin :-( ..... out of 10? Tell me what you think? Id give it 7 at best.
It was a ahme to see another Ausie lose a title fight . I respect Medley for getting in the ring but if he had faught any of the raining champs that hold a good world title belt such as WBO IBF WBA I dont think he would have lasted the distance.
I felt exactly the same way Marcus. I was also saying out loud at home, "bloody let your hands go medley".:yep I got the feeling he was worried about his chin in that match, as he was so hesitant to risk throwing some bombs.
Yep, that was for Fenechs second title and brings back some great memories! Dunno bout the origin, was in Vic then but do remember Payakaroon was going to give a kickboxing display in the ring after the fight. For some reason he never did follow through on his promise... Also remember the cringe inducing commentary, I know it was a hometown fight and all but "Take that Payakaroon, you're going down son" wasn't the least biased commentary ever. Still, a good night, a mate and I used to watch it every three or four months for years as he'd taped it.
Im not to suprised by this result, when you take such a big step up you are taking a risk. It didnt pay off but I think Robbie can come back from this and learn something from it. Really for anyone that has boxed "just letting your hands go" is not as simple as it sounds. Especially in a tactical fight against a higher calibre of opposition, by going all out and letting your guard down you risk falling even further behind. I feel Robbie was trying to do that when he knocked down and of course after that his mentality is going to change. He was at home against a very good opponant, I think nicking rounds and not allowing Isaac to outland him significantly was the only way he was going to get this, its not as though he took a drubbing in every round. I seriously feel he was only maybe 7 or 8 good clean punches from turning a couple of those rounds in his favour. Robbie did some pretty good things on friday. He moved well for 12 rounds and had Isaac missing heaps, he also deflected a lot of blows when he was pinned on the ropes. Overall his defence was quite good. He just didnt have anything on his counters, he looked uncomfortable fighting that way. Like many have said, he looked overawed by the occasion and that can happen when you havent experienced it before. I was disapointed he didnt use that right rip more, thats a great punch of his and I cant even remember seeing it once.
And honestly, what the hell is wrong with Phil Cropper staying as Robbie's trainer? He seems like a top trainer and him and Robbie have a good rapport. I dont see how Fenech was the right choice to be transplanted at the last minute, you could see Robbie was looking to Phil a lot of the time. I think Fenech has a good grasp on the technical side of boxing, but mostly for boxers who fight like he did. When he is in someones corner for a fight he gets to emotional and panics, thats not what a fighter needs. I must say I was impressed at the physique and strength of Isaac, I hadnt seen him at welter and didnt expect him to fill out so well there. Medley showed some flaws, but I reckon they can be worked on and with some more experience at the higher level he could even become a fringe contender, which I got to say I didnt think he could.
I thought Hatwatshock was very well built for a welter, i read that he was having trouble making 140, so the reports of him being a bulit up lightweight were way off. Props to Hastwosocks for comin to Aust to fight. Also his trainer was a bling ledgen!! Did you see the rings, chains and bracelets he was wearing!! He also cornered Hasblakcock very well.
