Okay my bad at least you admit you don't know much about boxing or it's history. I don't claim to be an expert, but I've been following it for 25yrs. There are some things in this sport you don't really have to understand, but you still have to respect. No, sometimes what they do in that ring isn't the wisest thing and could lead to life altering or life threatning consequences, but it's real easy to criticize without actually knowing what is going inside a fighter. Sometimes they expect a miracle with a lucky punch or comeback from the brink of defeat and have a breathtaking win, like Gatti used to do. People appreciate a good struggle because it relates to life. Most fans expect fighters to go down on their shield then to take the easy way out.
That machismo crap is dumb and has no place in a boxing gym UNLESS the opponent has no pop. Then it is a war of attrition. Machismo is a reason why many Mexican champions suffer such short reigns on top. They have some of the best durability in the game. The problem is when you start to use your durability as a tool in a fight and not an emergency measure. After a few solid Boxer Punchers a guy isn't the same. We still love it and it is part of the culture of boxing.
We shouldn't say what is right or wrong for a boxer to do in the ring as far as quitting or not unless you are in his shoes at that moment. Maybe he's will to win is too great to be denied even though we know he will eventually loose. I don't think manny would of quit if he was the one on the other end of the beating either, that's why this fighters are at such an elite level because there will to win is just too strong, way stronger than their physical capabilities can ever be.
Yea, but you know clearly the machismo isn't just with the Mexican culture. Sanchez, Finito Lopez, Abner Mares, etc are acouple that didn't fight face first, but in some situations no matter how good a boxer or slickster you are your going to have to go toe to toe. You are partially correct in that getting into many wars like Morales did will shorten your career, but retiring young like he did doesn't mean he had a short time at the top. I think alot of people get confused because a fighter retired by the age of 29 or 30 he didn't have a long career or a long reign. If your not fighting other guys on your level of course your going to have a long reign, but people would rather see a fighter win and lose vs the best. So your sayin Aaron Pryor shouldn't of have gone toe to toe with Arguello or Hagler shouldn't of have gone toe to toe with Tommy? You don't call that machismo? C'mon now.
it's all good if mexican champions suffer a short reign...cuz soon there will be another mexican champion to replace him chavez did have a pretty long reign tho...even with all his wars :happy
