Gonzalez did defeat Carbajal Two out of three times. IMO his overall boxing ability was better than Carbajal's. Gonzalez just loved to brawl sometime's too much. He did have Sorjaturong down early in thier fight, prior to getting caught himself.
They were both good fighters. Carbajal did lose twice to Gonzalez and was getting beat in the first fight until he got ko'ed by Carbajal. When it comes to those two I think Gonzalez was a better fighter. He was not overrated.
Both of them were really, when people place the two at the top of the 108 division. I think quite a few fighters around those weights could've beaten them. They made for some exciting fights though. I retract what I said earlier though about Carbajal being better though.
Carbajal had a great ticker and if he could get Lopez to brawl with him (ala GonzalesI) he would have his best chance. But even in a brawl I would take Lopez to win 3 times out of 4; in a technical match Lopez wins 9 times out of 10. It is not that Carbajal is that bad, but rather Lopez was that good!
Yeah...it's interesting that the one guy Lopez didn't fight at 105, Chana Porpaoin, was a slick boxer in his own right. Still, a past his best Lopez was able to deal with a pretty slick Will Grigsby, so I think he'd probably be able to walk down a boxer and eventually take control.
ricardo lopez's a great fighter but one thing makes me wonder. what about lopez's wars against rosendo alveraz? these two razor close decisions (the first fight being controversial for alveraz and the second a split decision) showed alveraz using good usage of crude strength, heart and aggression against lopez's virtually perfect boxing skills, long reach and champion heart. im think carbajal may have a 50/50 chance being that he is naturally bigger and possibly the best fighter that lopez would have fought (had they fought) carbajal vs alveraz would have been quite interesting too.
