I think he may still have enough to get into the top ten, and a big money shot at a big name........maybe even a shot at a title, given the right path and alot focus.

And what a great guy he seems to be.

    Go, GRANT!

Going into a potential Lewis fight he should have firstly listened to his body, the alarm bells that should have told him "You are not quite ready" came against Golota, he should have regrouped and looked more closely at why he was getting caught square on with shots early in fights.. It happened against Lennox.. It happened in his road back fight against Jameel, and it also happened quite early against Guinn in a fight that Mike really wasn't mentally right for. I love Mike and i always have time for him but he was only ever made to beat men who were limited because his dimensions were not that great, his footwork was horrible really due to his sheer height and balance, I studied this in a winning fight against Jorge Gonzales in Vegas , at Ballys once. I sat with veteran trainer Art Miles and discussed Mikes style and watched how he had a real struggle turning on such lethargic unsteady legs.. Mike acheived great stuff for a limited heavyweight, but when pitched against a special man like Lewis he was 1000% in above his station. I do think in todays heavyweight climate he may be able to show up a few of the wannabees , but he will never beat a Klitchko, and may struggle against fast paced men like Ibragimov... I hope he sticks around though, i have time for the man,l he is very committed to the game.. Coach Turner was the man to bring out the best in Grant.. he and Turner could do it all again...

Grant should fight McCline in a loser-goes-home fight. Both need a win of significance, and each could defeat the other.

A chance for Grant to redeem that 10-second debacle, I suppose.

I wish Grant the best, but I cannot get exicted by him for even 1 minute.

Not everyone has to be a world champ. Grant is one of these people, he just doesnt seem to be able to do anything else.

Grant seems to pop up now and then,go on a winning streak against weak competition, then fade away for a time. This will probably be a similar case. Seems like he has been around forever but he's still just 35. Grant has been written off as a pure media creation in recent years. There is some obvious truth there, he was never as good as HBO wanted us to believe. But Grant was a solid heavyweight for a few years not the next great one but he had a decent run. He could probably still land a big fight or two if he really wanted to but I don't think he's beating anyone in the top 10.

    Good post.

Grant's a guy that never did have the footwork or balance and really was working off of pure athleticism. I also think being pushed too early by HBO hurt him. He was never given time to develop at a reasonable pace.

He meant Marinaccio, the guy Grant just beat. Yes, Byrd did have a 7th round stoppage win against Marinaccio, although it was actually a corner retirement due to a shoulder injury. Timor Ibragimov had a legit TKO7 against him from what I know though.

I've cobbled this together from four or five reports...if I can get an actual copy of this fight then I'll confirm or deny the details:

Grant had Marinaccio down twice in the 7th, first from a counter right after a missed Marinaccio left, and then from a exchange ending in another right. But he and his corner was very upset with what they saw as some home cooking. Marinaccio was a local guy, with big support in the crowd.

Marinaccio struggled to get up from the second knockdown and trudged back to his stool looking dazed, but there was an extra minute added on to the rest period between rounds 7 and 8 for some unspecified reason. If I get my hands on the tape sometime, I'll report on this of course. Marinaccio wasn't rock steady when he came out for the 8th but still had that extra minute's worth.

Conversely, when Marinaccio rallied and got in a few shots in the 9th, apparently his best (and according to two of the judges only) round, the timekeeper went 43 seconds over time. Grant felt that they were hoping Marinaccio would nail him with something big and gave him some extra time.

One article on Fightnews also suggests there may have been a third knockdown by Grant in the 11th round, but I haven't seen that confirmed anywhere else yet.

A stoppage win would've been nicer, but a wide points win and two knockdowns will do. I'll have to see if I can get a copy to see how Grant actually looked in there.

And bizarrely enough, that's the first time he's ever gone 12 rounds in his career. Grant had never been past 10 before.

Grant won 14 of his last 15 fights.

    Eleven of them by KO.

Sure it was against limited opposition but it's not any worst then 99% of the prospects out there.

I'd love to see a rematch with Dominic Guinn.

    Don't know if Mike would!

Then again, Guinn has certainly provided plenty of examples of how to beat him these days...if Grant had tried to keep him on the end of a jab rather than fight up close in their fight, maybe he could've held him off and got the points win.

Best wishes for Grant, really hope he can find a resolution to his career than satisfies him. He deserves much more than to be regarded as a punchline.

And I do, regretfully, feel that Teddy Atlas was just all wrong for him and ended up doing more damage. Teddy had his heart in the right place, he wasn't being what he thought was mean and nasty, but his ways just weren't right for Grant. Turner kept it simple and to the point, Teddy's endless eulogizing and cruel-to-be-kind approach just never worked right.

Still. Grant seems to enjoy working with Eddie Mustafa Muhammad, it's been slow going against weak opposition but this is his seventh win in a row since the Guinn loss. Fighting soon is definitely the key, he needs to be back in there by Jan or Feb by the latest, and in this division if you keep ploughing away and shake the right hands then eventually you can get back in contention again. That in itself, considering, would be a small victory for Grant.

You're a pro boxer, are you? Any good? Good enough to call another one '****'? Or just a faceless keyboard warrior?
