Boxing basics. When fighting a southpaw, try to keep the lead foot outside of theirs, and if your step does get stuck inside, make sure it's not inside by a huge distance and be ready to adjust very quickly. There may be other ways to box, but Kalambay's was a fairly textbook style, so what he did manifested itself as a fatal error.
You're quite right. Sumbu was really way off in how he placed his left foot there. He did have problems fighting the southpaw style. Perfectly capitalized on by Nunn, though.
Nunn seized that moment with stunning force. It's one of the best wins ever at middleweight, considering how swiftly it was accomplished.
I think most fights that feature two true world-class fighters and happen to end in a one-round KO are flukes. Sure there are exceptions, such as Liston-Patterson, but no one can sit there and truthfully say that Nunn was THAT much better than Kalambay. Some could very well (and successfully) argue the exact opposite, regardless of what happened that night. The fact that Nunn happened to operate smartly and seized an opportunity beautifully there doesn't mean it wasn't a fluke. It absolutely was.
Nunn was making pace in that round, Sambu looked a bit loose and put himself in a dangerous spot and got tagged with that left. Remember he was acumulating victories and had never been dropped. No fluke. I remember when Kosta did the same to Zab Juda.
I think you're struggling with the definition of "fluke." Let's say they fought ten times. Would you expect Nunn to stop Kalambay again in one round even one more time out of those ten? Please don't say "yes."
If my untie had ball she'd be my uncle. Fighters don't meet for 10 fights so it is all heresy. Micheal was a great great talent that got lazy and a bit cocky. In this fight he was being the agresser and when the opportunity presented it self, pow a accurate direct hit. End of story.
I think you also need to understand what "fluke" means. It's actually NOT a synonym of "worthless azzhole" or anything like that so I'm not sure how what I wrote makes me a hater. It's not denigrating Nunn to say this result was a fluke. It merely suggests that such a result, particularly against an opponent as worthy as Kalambay, would hardly be expected to happen again. There is nothing false about that statement whatsoever.
Its a granted that he may not get tagged like that in the first but come on, I feel that Sambu moved himself in that fight ending position by his own accord. Michael had the left hand that delivered that crisp punch, hind sight a great thing. Is there any one that could of taken that punch and beat the ten count ? Classic KO that stunned the division. SRL didnt want anything to do with Michael after this fight.
