Michael Spinks Appreciation Thread and Fight by Fight Discussion

Michael Spinks was a great light-heavyweight and has a historically significant win against Holmes at heavyweight.

Spinks is one of the great fighters of the 1980s.

 

I agree. Remember that this was the same Cooney that Foreman gets praise for taking out 2 or 3 years later and without the same physical disadvantages that Spinks overcame.

Many people give him flak for the win because they think that Spinks ought to have fought Tony Tucker who was the top rated challenger at the time. But Tucker was unknown to the general public. So the public wanted Spinks Cooney. Hence the 4 million he got for Cooney vs the 500 grand he would have gotten for Tucker.

Also, I think that Spinks would have done very well in the heavyweight era's of 185 lbs heavyweights.

 

Didn't someone get banned a while back for making the same argument (among other things)? Might have been uncletermite.

I think Spinks would have killed Marciano, he was that good. His ONE and ONLY loss to Tyson taints his legacy. His loss to the youngest ever heavyweight champion, an ATG. He is definitely underrated.

"Kill" is a strong word.

I definitely think he could have handed Marciano his first L. But Marciano would have his chances too. Their styles were made for each other.

 

Can't see Spinks beating Marciano personally. His workrate would tell and i don't think Spinks takes a big punch at heavyweight well at all.
