JESS WILLARD AND OTHERS ARE CALLED TO TRIAL

Court Begins Preliminary Inquiry Into Death of "Bull" Young in Prize Ring

LOS ANGELAS, Aug. 29.—The preliminary manslaughter hearing of Jess Willard and 11 others concerned In the bout at Vernon arena last Friday night, that resulted in the death of Wlllards opponent, John <"B«M") Young, was begun today before Justice of the Peace Summerfleld. W. J. Ford, assistant district attorney, in an opening statement, said it was his intention to ask the court to hold the defendants to answer to a second degree murder charge in the superior court. "There are only two courses possible for me to pursue." said Ford. "One Is to proceed on tbe basis that the contest was a lawful one. If I adopted that course I would prosecute Wlllard only, and on the ground that he had not used due ctire in the blows he struck the dead pugilist. STATE'S CONTENTION "But I shall not pursue that coiirgS, as I do not believe I could obtain a conviction. I contend that the bout in which Young was killed was an unlawful prize fight, and the state will try to have Willard, as all of the other defendants, held to answer on second degree murder charges." The defence was prepared to contend that the bout was lawful, basing the contention upon a decision of Judge Frank R. Willis of the criminal department of the Angeles superior court that bouts licensed by municipalities were legal. The defense alleged that the Willard-Young fight had met all the requirements of the incorporated city of Vernon, where the contest was staged. PHYSICIAN TESTIFIES Dr. G. A. Scroggs, the physician of the Pacific Athletic club, which promoted the bout, was tiie first witness called. He was on the witness stand during the greater part of the morning Bession, identifying the defendants and telling of the operation whirh he and other surgeons performed on Young to relieve a cerebral hemorrhage. The defendants, Who were all In court, wore: Jess Wlllard, Young's opponent; T. J. McCarey and Al Oreenewald, promoters; Charles F. Eyton, referee; Harry Gilmore Jr., Young's manager; Tom Jones, Willard's manager; Al Harder, timekeeper, and Harry Monahan, Jack Davles, Charles Anslinger, Eddie Webster and James Cameron, seconds. BILL TOO DRASTIC Representatives of the athletic clubs of Los Angeles appeared today before a committee representing the Los Angeles Church federation, which has the anti pTisse fight movement in charge, with a substitute bill designed to govern boxing matches in thla sta'e. The club representatives contended that the bill proposed by the federation was too drastic. The athletic clubs object to the claupe in the original measure prohibiting admission fees to boxing matches. Modifications in other sections of the bill were also proposed. Owing to the protests of the clubs, it was announced that the circulation of initiative petitions for a specal election to decide the prize fight question would be delayed until the factions opposed to professional boxing agree/l upon a single plan of procedure. Initiative petition toward a state law prohibiting long duration boxing exhibitions or those professionalized, ether by gate receipts or prize awards, will be circulated immediately throughout California. This was decided late today by the eivio righteousness committee of the church federation, which waved aside protests of those interested In boxing as an athletic sport.

While this is very sad, I'm not sure on the relevance. A fighter who kills someone in the ring, isn't inherently more dangerous. Plenty of deaths in fighting happened at low levels.

Unfortunately anyone can be killed in any boxing match. Steps have been taken over the years to make it less likely but it still happens and often at the hands of inferior fighters that may not be considered powerhouses.
If you watch old fights sometimes it’s amazing at how long the refs let fights go compared to now. Also for those who do not know they lowered the title limit from 15 to 12 rounds after Ray Mancini killed a Korean fighter about 35 years ago.
Any case Jess may have hit harder then the heavyweight M Spinks but you can’t hit someone if you can’t land the punches and you can’t stop getting hit if the punches come too fast to stop.

Willard got shut out by Johnson in the fight he won the title because it was 45 rounds. Willard won solely because Johnson just didn't have the power to stop someone Willards size. Michael Spinks has it.

The Cooney Spinks beat was probably better then the best Willard. Even if hes not Willard is mainly a threat to Spinks because of his size and the potential to knock Spinks out and Willard is more overrated as a puncher then as a fighter. Willard gained this reputation because he killed someone in the ring in a fight that wouldn't get sanctioned today. The best opponents Willard knocked out before the 10th round were Rodel and George Davis. Willard was very good for someone his size and wore fighters down.

Willards KO rate on boxrec reads 91 but note that boxrec isn't counting NWS as decisions. Its 80% through 25 wins. About a third of those 25 are over guys with a winning record.
