Middleweight Tournament First Pick Monzon vs Fullmer

I haven't been actively posting for a while, just lurking, but I felt the need to here, i'm glad you posted this, I was worried about some of the prior responses in the thread. Monzon WOULD win easily.


On another topic, I got speaking to an Italian guest in the bar last week and we got speaking and he eventually came out with how he was at Carlos's 72 fight against Denny Moyer in Italy, rome i think. He has promised to send me the ticket from it when he gets home. Cheesing.

Thanks, hopefully i'll be a regular again, my life is now normal again after a bit of a 6 month binge.

Fullmer's speed, strength and aggressiveness will see him win quite a few rounds in this one, especially in the first half of the bout. But as the pace slows down, Monzon is going to start picking him off with the jab and soon the right hands are going to follow.

I'll give Fullmer the benefit of the doubt and say he lasts the distance, but he'll probably take a pasting in the last third of the fight and whilst he'll lose a close decision on the cards, he will be outclassed by the end. He's dead game though, and won't stop coming and trying to force the issue.

I have a lot of time for Fullmer, think he's a great, great fighter, but this is about as bad a match up as he's likely to get. Even still, I think he makes it competitive.

 

I think his problem was that he was too reckless sometimes. For instance against Lausse and Fernandez, he could have stuck to outboxing either, but he mixed it up way too much and got clobbered. Still ended up getting the better of Fernandez for mine, but he took a beating against Lausse which was hard to watch if you're a Fullmer fan.
