Dempsey just too much for Flowers. Who does give a tough fight. But doesn't have enough to defeat Dempsey. Flowers does find his rythum in the middle rounds, but still falls a little short. Dempsey 15 round UD.
I'm picking the slickster to get a decision, but Dempsey is the tyoe of fighter to beat the great Flowers, and could do on another day.
I would pick Flowers to win this one. I think he would use his superior size and aggression to bully the smaller man as the fight wore on. Dempsey was a very small midleweight by the standards of Flowers's day.
I would pick Flowers. While Dempsey was undoubtedly a great technician he was essentialy a welterweight which would not be good against a fighter with the boxing ability and power of Flowers. Tiger Flowers was the all time scorecard king. Nobody ever produced a convincing win over Flowers on the cards. Prety much every loss of his career was either a knockout or a controvertial points loss. If Flowers had a chin like Harry Greb he would have been virtualy unbeatable.
Additionally, he was rough. The idea of him in with a smaller man doesn't bare thinking about actually, unless that man was Sugar Ray.
This is an interesting fight. I think that Dempsey definitely has the better legacy, but Tiger might be a difficult proposition. A look at Tigers opposition, i cant really find a similar fighter to dempsey. Though at first glance i wonder if the 5ft 7 inch Panama Joe Gans may be similar because Panama KOd him out pretty comprehensively, although he was a bit green and i think he did reverse that decision, it was in a closely fought newspaper decision. It is probably a bit of a stretch to draw similarities between the 5 ft 8 Kid NOrfolk who KOd Tiger in 1 as he was quite a bit bigger. The Same goes with Fireman Jim Flynn and Jack Delaney, who both had too much power for Tiger it would seem, But Dempsey isnt really going to have the power advantage to capitalise. Still, i am thinking that outside of Panama Gans, the closest that Tiger would have fought to Dempsey is probably Mickey Walker. And mickey Walker took his crown. Albeit by a 10 round Decision. The non pareil did not really seem to have all that much of a problem fighting bigger opponents. The closest i can see that he fought to Flowers in Size and ability was probably the slightly bigger Dominic McCaffery. Jack won this decision. He did lose to the bigger George Lablanch but it was a long way after thirty rounds and supposedly to the illegal Foul pivot blow. He seemed to go the distance or take a long time with his opponents, like Australian Billy Smith, but he did win. I am starting to think that Dempsey was a little too good and too consistent for Tiger. Even the massive hitting Bob Fitzsimmons took 13 rounds to put away dempsey, so i dont think that Tiger has much of a chance to score a KO. It would be a good fight and definitely a close fight going to the cards, but i think that if this is the case, Jack Has the better name to win the close controversial rounds and should win a close Majority Decision. Though i am happy to reconsider if enough opinions are around to sway me.
