I really wasn't really comparing the statistical likelihood of their (prospective in one case) triumphs- I meant comparable as contests propelling them to some kind of national stardom. Raducanu's triumph was amazing- however it wasn't quite as unlikely as the stats made it appear. Raducanu hadn't come from nowhere- she had after all got to the second week (last 16) of Wimbledon just a few months earlier. The unprecedented Covid situation somewhat masked her true current standing. i don't agree that Shields/Marshall is manufactured: easily the two best fighters in their division, both with some elite skills, great contrast of styles and personalities, both at their peak, compelling backstory... It's a mouthwatering fight- promotion or no promotion.
She entered Wimbledon as a wildcard and on the back of that performance she had a wildcard to the US open. She had not competed on the WTA tour prior to that win. Obviously you are not a tennis fan as you do not realise the magnitude of the victory and the significance of that. If you do not think the Sheilds v Marshall rivalry has been manufactured by both promoters then you have been caught hook line and sinker son.
Virtually every boxing promotion is manufactured - at least the Marshall-Shields thing has something to give it a beginning. Whether it's been manufactured since is up for debate but you can't deny they've met before, they've managed to miss each other since that amateur fight, and they're top of their game now. Still don't think either of them is particularly marketable people (and all this GWOAT nonsense is tiresome - there's hardly been many to choose from) - but it's a decent fight, will find a decent TV audience and will make the fighters a few quid.
I think of Women's boxing as another class, similar to weight classes. I wouldn't send in Savannah Marshall to fight Tyson Fury, but I also wouldn't send in Julio Cesar Martinez to face Fury either. There are at least 3 or 4 women boxers, off the top of my old head, who look pretty darn fundamentally sound to me. I could probably think of more if I tried. Mikaela Mayer is definitely 1 of them.
Mayer is one of the better boxers in the whole women's pool but my god she came across as properly obnoxious on social media at one point as was mentioned it was when her VS Terri Harper was being discussed.
Most the female boxer's are delusional and obnoxious on social media they have no idea that they can't box for **** compared to men LOL
Replying to my own ancient thread where I suggested Mayer might become an 'icon'... ...on the day she joins OnlyFans. Game changed, or something.
I like Mikaela, but both her and Baumgaertner were crap in that fight, it was really low level. The build up was great, but they are both poor. Easy wins for Serrano and even past it Taylor etc
Different kind of “inside footage” than the usual on that site I’d guess… and she joins legends like Chisora as OnlyFans celebs!
I wanted Baumgartner to win but not like that - one of the very few warranted rematches to be made even if it was a stinker.
