Cooney didn't land a meaningful punch and Holmes hurt him badly with a few right hands, one in particular to the forehead. However i'm not taking into account Spinks at Heavy. Those guys are great hitters, but none better than Hearns P4P and Tommy is a far better and more aggressive fighter than any of them. Them not ko'ing Spinks doesn't mean he can't, as seen by a massacre of the Duran proportions. We are talking P4P here tho, not reality. Little doubt Spinks would have murdered Hearns under normal circumstances.
Why? I know Tyson is some sort of Super Hero to some people - but that doesn't explain why Spinx was so easily starched. The Spinx chin is questionable at HW.
Lifes a *****. Did Hagler grant Hearns the rematch he wanted and had been agreed to or did he run off and take the big bucks on offer for the Leonard fight?
Against Tyson, Spinks went down from a body punch, and then was KO'd by a short right to the head. I think Spinks was not mentally or physically right for that fight, but you're right, his chin at heavyweight may not have been solid. I dont think Cooney landed on his chin. I dont rate Larry Holmes as a KO puncher at all, in fact almost all his stoppages he looked incapable of finishing his man without the referee waving it off, sometimes controversially. Shavers, Weaver, Snipes, L.Spinks and a lot of second-raters.
Actually read there was talk of these two fighting back in the 80's. I think Hearns makes a fight of it until the seventh or eighth, when Spinks takes him out.
