Tysons chances of victory in 1990 Tokyo vastly increase vs Lyle. Because Douglas and Lyle have nothing in common. Douglas was simply a better boxer than Lyle. And not only that, Douglas was bigger too. Tyson: 5'10, 71" reach. Lyle: 6'3, 76" reach. Douglas: 6'4, 83" reach. And if you really want to get technical, Lyles first loss was to Quarry who was pretty much the same size as Tyson Lyle:6'0, 72" reach. Tyson knocks guys like Lyle out even on a bad day.
I think Lyle was as good a boxer as Douglas. I'm not saying he'd beat that version of Tyson though. In theory it must be very possible, simply because of Douglas's poor quality. Douglas had lost to much worse fighters than Quarry. I doubt Douglas could beat prime Quarry ever actually.
Douglas might lose to Quarry, he might not. But he did beat Mike Tyson, something I don't believe Ron Lyle would be able to emulate. On what basis is he a better boxer than Douglas? id love to see some highlights of Ron Lyle showing off the sweet science. It doesn't even have to be half as good as Douglas against Tyson. Is there any fights you can point me in the direction of where Lyle puts on a boxing master class?
I The same Lyle who was knocked out in Round 5? And that too, against a guy coming off 15 month layoff who was mentally not the same fighter he once was?
I said he was as good as Douglas, not better. He was ahead on points against Ali until caught with a perfect right hand. He outpointed some decent fighters. Douglas didn't look great outside of the Tyson fight, so it's plausible that Lyle would look great against 1990 Tyson too.
Lyle was facing a guy coming off 15 month layoff who developed serious confidence issues, despite that he still got sparked.
Lyle was better than James smith in absolutely everything... Stronger ,hits harder, was better and he lasted 12 with tyson
