Marshall lost 14 out of 38 fights (37%) and was never near a world title. Douglas lost 6 out of 46 (13%) and had three world title fights. There really is no comparison.

Did Liston lose and have his jaw busted by a 180lb journeyman?

Yeah Liston managed to KO the 180lb journeyman once in three bouts. Whoopee do.

What difference does that make? He should never have lost to someone like Marshall. How much credit can you give someone for fighting "valiantly" and lasting 8 rounds against a completely overmatched and undersized journeyman?

I also see you ignored my first question. Who did Liston beat that was better than Tyson?

I mean, Liston beat the legendary Cleveland Williams. Didn't you know that Williams was bigger, faster, and more powerful than Tyson himself? God knows how a fighter of such magnitude managed to lose to just about everyone of any relevance, but that's the story I guess.

I never said he was faster. He was undeniably bigger and most certainly hit harder. Johnny Tocco who has seen, Liston, Foreman, Tyson, Ruddock, Williams, and others hitting the bag, said Williams hit it harder than anybody he'd ever seen with the exception of Liston and Foreman.

Yes he did. I've stated multiple times he did. But you haven't answered my question. Did Liston quit after having his jaw broken or did he fight through it? Liston's heart is not even be in question.

No Liston didn't quit against Marshall and I never said otherwise. Did Tyson quit against Douglas or did he go out on his shield?

Liston made harder work of Marshall than he should have. Most of the top guys who fought Marshall only needed one attempt at beating him.

A prime Williams' chances would have been better for sure. I don't see how Williams could have ever done much better though. Ali could take whatever Williams had to offer offensively. Ali was faster, more elusive, had a better jab, had better footwork, just as tall, just as big, way better chin, similar reach... Ali used his height and reach better.

Maybe if Williams was at his very best he would have lasted another round or two?

Two vicious wars with Razor Ruddock. Taking his lumps against Douglas and almost coming back to KO him. Taking his lumps against Lewis for eight rounds despite being completely shot. To pretend that Tyson didn't have heart or rocks is completely asinine. Especially when you're praising Liston for lasting six rounds against a little journeyman he outweighed by almost 25lbs who'd have been too small to even fight Tyson, Douglas, Lewis or Ruddock.

I'm sure there are people out there who rate Floyd Patterson over Sonny Liston too. To each his own and all that.

 

Tyson had a weakness of when put down he stayed down, most other top Heavyweights can get up and continue, but once Tyson goes down he stays down.
