:goodThanks bud! That information came from an online source that I read after Hugo died a few years ago,...it was an indepth article that more or less explained his less than crowd pleasing style. Hugo was a nice looking, pleasant sort of guy who, much like my man Willie Pastrano, wanted to preserve his looks as much as possible in this very dangerous profession...he believed that you could win by being defensive and using guile and trickery. I have this strange admiration for that...and fighters like Corro, Pastrano, Jimmy Young, etc.,..who practice the more scientific side of the noble sport. Unfortunately, most boxing fans, especially the "casual fans" have a real distaste for the safety first guys. Argentine fans for the most part, I;ve read, didn't ever cotton up to Corro,..referring to him as too "shiny",..who didn't talk too much, and was smiling after his loss to Vito. They feel that he didn't measure up to the greats like Monzon, Galindez, Perez and others, and Galindez in particular, was very critical of Corro and how he won the title from Valdez...he felt that in those last three rounds that he should have tried to put Rodrigo away, but that was just not in Corro's DNA, and how he was trained in the Mendoza school.
Ok one of my controversial ones. Hoya vs Tito. I felt there were some close early rounds but after dominating the middle rounds Hoya abandoned all offence. Judah vs Baldomir was a joke. Khan vs Peterson, he was too bothered about proving he had a chin.
I don't remember Evander boxing that well in this fight - I thought he looked sluggish from the off - but I do recall being frustrated that he couldn't finish Bowe when had him out on his feet in the 6th. It only needed a couple of decent shots.
Actually, I was impressed by Bonecrusher....we knew that Tyson was gonna win, but Bonecrusher just decided, "he ain't gonna knock me out" and dammit, he was right. That was an accomplishment back then.
Eddie, I totally agree. I recall yelling at the TV screen, "You've got him! Throw some punches!" Another instance in that same vein was between Jorge Paez and Stevie Cruz. I can't recall the round but Cruz dropped Paez and absolutely had him, but just sort of stood there holding back. Same TV screen, same screaming.
Well said. Wlad is adamant that he will let his hands go in the rematch. Can't wait to see what happens.
I felt in the first round he was using his footwork really well, doubling up on jabs and out jabbing Bowe. Problem with Evander was his ego, he always wanted to knock Bowe out and got caught up with in fighting which fell right into Bowe's comfort zone.
Not sure he looked that comfortable in the 6th, BB. But you're right, he liked to brawl Bowe and after 30 rounds of doing it, that was his one opportunity to make it pay and he let it go. I thought that was Holy's last chance to climb up the ATG rankings. Didn't dream he'd do that and then some in 96.
Both showings by Floyd Patterson vs Sonny Liston. Yeah, he would of lost anyway, no matter what? Yeah, maybe,...probably, maybe,...but at any rate he might have tried something different, maybe in the 2nd fight, and would have escaped the 1st round. To borrow my buddy jowcol's famous phrase (for the second time, lol) "that's my $0.02 thrown in".
