of wilde's 137 wins, more than 115 come from fighters win 6 wins or less of barry's 59 wins, only 6 come against fighters with more than 10 wins
Just a note, most of the records of the early boxers were far from complete. I myself, have to put in 1,000's of fights that aren't in BoxRec. The further back you go, the more difficult it is to get a complete accurate record.
As basic as his point is, Asero isn't as far off as you guys would like to think. While guys like Wilde and Barry had very incomplete records, what the records do show are the elite, or near elite fighters they fought. I doubt very seriously there would be records and accounts of their fights with total scrubs, but not their best opposition. It just doesn't equate. I don't rate Wilde as highly as most, not at Flyweight anyway. A guy like Canto I felt was much more accomplished.
Gavin Rees. He was 26-0 having fought nobodys, but he did get a good win against M'Baye for the WBA title even if his reign only lasted 1 fight.
he was built up but he was 49-0 before he got stopped by Dickie Ryan....George Foreman had a few decent fights in between but he had a real padded record...they believed in that in the 70's and 80's....unbeaten or padded records...lamar clark annd Billy Fox were others but from earlier days
I suppose in a way, Holmes title 20 title defenses was a little padded. Most of the time, he defeneded against guys with 13-0 records, while he was top of the world. That is almost as bad as padded Floyd Patterson's title defense against a guy in his pro fight. Now Holmes still beat top fighters here or there, BUT MOST of the time it was against a a lesser foe.
After reading the thread about Lamar Clark and looking at his career record, he would have to get my vote.
Smith beat Kirkland Laing in his backyard and fought some decent names. Not to mention he fought hundreds of fighters with some decent names in there as opposed to a Don Steele who never fought anyone, peroid.
you sent me the complete fight i thought Davey got it and i am a huge Basilio fan i had it by 4 rounds to Davey but Basilio didnt fight well at all. yes you are correct i kinda misworded it. He showed he was more than a TV creation by showing he had heart getting up and fighting on. That he was a true fighter not a manufactured one if you get me. yes believe taht if you will these records are incomplete Wilde has a big listed record which shows he must have been a superstar as alot of his fights are listed unlike a lot of other fighters of the times. The guys he fought against have like 2-5 records as there record is incomplete but for them to have a record on Boxrec means they must have had fights reported in Newspapers etc... so they cant have been some unknown journyman. no they show some of the fighters they fought yes he does but tahts because records are incomplete
