Hilarious. Was just about to answer this thread again with Mayweather vs. Gatti. Decided to read through the responses and saw I was third reply with the same thing in 2007.... Time flies.
There was a fight in the 40's or 50's when the winner threw 0 punches! The other guy swung and missed, then fell out of the ring and wasn't able to get back into it in 20 seconds. Punch stats are usually accurate in picking the winner in fights that do not have any knockdowns. You could say punch stats are more reliable than some judges. I'd like to see unofficial round by round card on punch stats. Best guess is they have it right 80% of the time or more. I would not use punch stats exclusively as a tool to pick a winner. The stats themselves do not distinguish between a big punch and a punch that landed with minimal force, nor can they add anything to ring general ship.
Tua vs Ibeabuchi Facts & Stats David Tua (27-0) vs Ike Ibeabuchi (16-0) Tua was considered by many ****ysts to be the "next Mike Tyson." Tua vs Ibeabuchi set a CompuBox record for most combined punches thrown in a heavyweight fight: 1,730. Ibeabuchi also set the individual record by throwing 975 punches and averaging 81 per round. The heavyweight average is around 50. Both threw bombs and neither took a backward step all night. After the Tua fight, Ibeabuchi began complaining of headaches. He was taken directly to the hospital where he underwent several tests, including an MRI but nothing seemed abnormal. He also showed no evidence of brain bleeds or swelling. After being released from the hospital, Ibeabuchi began to say that he was being plagued by demons; evil spirits that only he and his mother could see Ike was imprisoned following charges that he tried to **** a woman in Las Vegas in July 1999. - See more at: http://www.fightsaga.com/boxing-videos/item/3036-Tua-vs-Ibeabuchi-%281997%29-Facts,-Stats-Highlights#sthash.xh3itGOM.dpuf
Vitali is a punch stat king who threw as many punches as Marciano or Frazier, sometimes more. Total punches landed: Vitali : 302 Briggs: 73 Total punches thrown: Vitali 727 Briggs: 316 Vitali hit Briggs with a colossal shot in round seven ( I think ) that sent him across the ring! Briggs was a punk in the pre-fight hype. I remember thinking to myself, Vitail should punish him. By round 12, I started to worry a bit as Briggs had that sad glassy eyed look of a fighter that was badly punished but had too much pride to quit. Vitali decided to press the action in round 12 for a knockout. The ref and Briggs' corner should be ashamed of themselves. He had no shot to win, and was badly hurt. This is the reason boxing has a TKO. Tragedy almost happened. Briggs had broken facial bones, and slipped into a coma after the fight. The doctors at could not wake him up for a while.
It was the worst beating I have ever seen. A lot of people don't get that a 4th round knockout by a Mike Tyson isn't anywhere near as bad as a guy being treated like a heavy bag by a 240 plus pound monster. I remember seeing Briggs with a horrible look on his face, every time Vitali landed that straight right. He looked like he was seeing his dead relatives after each punch. He should've never been given his license to fight after that massacre.
True. And even getting hit by a little guy continuously is worse than getting hit by one crushing shot from a guy like Tyson. Deuk Koo Kim, Kiko Bejines, and Johnny Owen are all examples of guys who died after getting hit A LOT by smaller guys.
Yep. The beat down may not be as pretty, but it's far worse for the person on the receiving end. I've always liked Vitali. But he was one of the nastiest guys out there. He really enjoyed beating people up.
