I'd say Dempsey (not really world-wide but very popular in the US), Ali (not so beloved in his fighting days but THE world-wide boxing figure - most beloved today probably), Tyson (mostly because of his wild behaviour) and DLH (probably the most beloved fighter in his fighting days ever... the women half of mankind has something to do with it )...
James J Braddock. His level of popularity when he came to the heavyweight title - from the relief that millions were having to endure - was ludicrous.
Agree with everyone that worldwide Ali is the most famous boxer of all time, not just through his fighting abilities but through the political issues and dramas that he went through which have increased his notoriety. I would say in terms of the world today Mike Tyson is still an iconic figure and would be the most universally recognised fighter. As this thread has started covering most popular sportsman of all time, it has to be a footballer as this is the most watched and loved sport on the planet, in terms of recognition Pele has to be there, as he is largely debated as the greatest footballer ever and not only that is a worldwide ambassador for the game for FIFA. David Beckham is probably the worlds most well known sportsman these days I would think though due to Manchester Utd's global brand and particularly the support they have in the far east. No offence meant to anyone who posted this but IMO I don't think Jordan or Montana have global appeal, superstars in the states no doubt.
In America, yes. remember, a few countries excepted, the rest of the world doesnt see basketball as a sport. There are a hundred soccer players that are more known than Jordan
Only in America. People like Joe Montana, Tiger Woods, and Michael Jordon aren't even really that big of a deal over here in the UK.
I dont even know who the hell Joe Montana is . IMO Ali is THE most popular athelete ever, my cousins in Jamaica who have never watched a boxing match in their lives were talking about him, also people in my school all know who Ali is but at the same time dont give a **** about boxing or even know how many rounds there are in a match. A name that hasn't ben mentioned in this thread yet is Evander Holyfield who is also really popular when in boxing terms.
Jordan is the most famous athlete ever. That is not an opinion, is a fact. Jordan is the only person that people recognize just by looking at his silhouette(sorry if I mispelled). People know his bald head and his jumping without even seeing his face
