On January 12, 1945, in San Francisco (where else?) one Smiley Burnette lost to one Billy Gilbert. This might not be the most ridiculous defeat, but it was certainly the most ridiculous fight, although one might have to be my age to appreciate this post.
who was the guy who got clocked in the fight he was winning easy when he stuck his chin out? This was a couple of years ago... Nate Campbell?
I didn't want to include this either but he said on paper without looking at the circumstances; its a very bad loss then. Arguably the greatest heavyweight of all time losing to a smaller fighter with a 7-0-1 record.
yeah to Robbie Peden and that's the fight I first thought of, however reading the opening post it seems we're looking for another type of fight. Accoridng to the betting odds Danny Williams was actusally a bigger dog against Tyson that McBride was.
Golota-Bowe II. Golota was in total control of the fight, apart from the round when Bowe knocked him down with something similar to rabbit punch. Otherwise, he was just landing at will, and at some point it looked already like there is no way he can lose the fight - in fact, the stoppage by referee would be quite OK. Only KO could save Bowe, but he was hardly in shape for it. He lost the first fight by DQ for the same reason in almost the same circumstances, and before rematch he was trained not to hit too low to avoid similar problems... and still it did not work at all.
I think it was worse the second time around considering how light Bowe came in. He was obviously taking it seriously and training hard.
Iran Barkley tko 10 Gerrie Coetzee!?! I had set my vcr to record boxing on ESPN. I didn't know who was fighting, but I used to record shows in case I missed something good. I used watch as much boxing as I could before becoming a family man. Anyway... I found out I was going to be seeing Iran Barkley vs. Gerrie Coetzee. I thought, "that almost sounds ridiculous." This would be like someone telling me Nigel Benn is going to be facing Carl "the truth" William this weekend. Imagine that I made a fantasy match thread with Nigel Benn vs. Carl "the truth" Williams. Then imagine that fight was really going to happen this weekend. That's how I felt. Barkley vs. Coetzee was not ridiculous because of its outcome, it was strange for ever even taking place.
Ali losing to Spinks Duran losing to Laing Hagler losing to a guy named Bobby Monroe (I think) I'll add Miguel Canto's loss to Chan-Hee Park. Park had 3 less fights than Canto had defenses of the Flyweight crown.
