It is hard for this younger generation to envision the cold fear that the young Joe Louis had over all his opponents during the era 1935 to 1939 or so... My favorite description of the Joe Louis attack was "like a coil spring unwinding "...This Joe Louis destroys almost any heavyweight ever... Just watch this "coil spring" unload three blurring left-hooks on the concrete chin of Max Baer in 1935...Frightening !
Bert I dont mean to turn this into another thread but just out of curiosity who do you have winning between prime dempsey and prime louis? I'm interested on your take
Regarding Jack Dempsey...in his book Championship Fighting Dempsey talks about being in the Ring with Willard and looking at him and being scared..and he describes his feelings as fighting for his life not just a title..Dempsey even talks about how the fear stayed with him even after he won the title..he woke up the night after he won with a dream that Willard had knocked him out.
the one i remember most is this... go to 6.15 onwards... [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vNiY5JdeBeo[/ame] funny enough he had fought very agressive and confident against holyfield before this fight ^^
Ricky my opinion is based on my reliance of experts who saw both Dempsey and Louis ,both in their primes...From all that I have read from the boxing fraternity who saw them at their best I would choose Dempsey because of his faster start and his faster movements on defense if need be. Boxing is about styles and Dempsey was a vast improvement from the bobbing style of Arturo Godoy, who gave Louis all he could handle in their bouts...So if forced to I would pick Dempsey to more likely survive rhis bout between my two favorite heavyweights...I have this my favorite fantasy bout ever...Cheers.
I remember reading a great quote by Gene Tunney before, about fear... but I can't seem to find it anymore... anyone know the one I'm talking about? :think
Ive got it in Tysons autobiography, he stated he was scared of Spinks and would miss training on purpose to keep the fear inside him and then he would train twice as hard.
Holyfield said the night before the Tyson fight he slept about 2 hours. Holyfield couldnt sleep. He read the bible, and tried to sleep but basically had an awful night and was a nervous wreck before the fight. Then before the fight "Ok its time to perform now"
Yep, Richardson didn't want to be there. For some idiotic reason he was fighting for a junior feather title and weighed in at superflyweight :huh
