    Well, I disagree.....
Baer was a very DANGEROUS fighter, not great, but could KO anyone in the division....
Carnera was not great but is underrated by many, the guy was not so bad, Primo had a good jab with a murderous uppercut.....And was incredibly powerful !!

    Eddie Machen vs. Jerry Quarry

A wily veteran schools a young hard-banging brawler.

Ok, to clarify: He was technically poor. He was big, durable, powerful and strong, but technically poor. It's easier to look skillful against such opponents than against other skillful fighters.

Big yes. Strong yes. But also unskilled.

The great exhibitions for me are when one fighter shows great skill against a very skilled opponent. McCallum-Toney is such a prime example since not only was Toney very skilled, he was also superior physically to McCallum in just about every department.

That´s a sloppy observation. Baer is technically poor most of the time. But when you watch a bit closer and a bit more of him, than you´ll see that he shows very good technique at times, especially with his right hand, and those are the punches that hurt his opponents. He would get them to believe in his bad technique and sloppyness and then out of nowhere would surprise them.

Tiresome. Of course he wasn't totally without craftiness, just like Foreman wasn't. But on the whole these two were unskilled fighters compared to others at that level.

If you can't admit to this simple fact, we'll just have to disagree as I can't be bothered arguing it anymore than I will argue evolution or if the earth is really flat with the nuts in the lounge.

In some senses you are very good poster, but when it comes to looking objectively at some older fighters you aren't. Baer was unskilled. End of story.

    Okay, Okay, fair enough !
But, Baer had a good jab......Did you see Baer vs Schmeling ?
Baer could box very well on the outside against a good boxer like Schmeling......You are a bit harsh describing them as "unskilled"...in my opinion.....

Yes they were, still a very good performance and a very good fight. One of my favourite hw fights actually. Yes, Baer was crude, I didn´t argue that he wasn´t.

Have you even read my post? Because yours has nearly nothing to do with it. Yes, Baer lacked in technique, but there was more to it than just beeing unskilled.

Sorry, but I don´t buy the myth of an evolution in boxing. The existence of fighters like Kid Chocolate, Barney Ross or Joe Louis in the 30s is evidence enough for me that this is a myth. If that makes me un-objective in your eyes than so be it.
