Really? Based on? I mean he was a terriffic fighter but there are plenty fo fighters who deserve to be ranked at mw IMO.
that's an inherently flawed way of comparing the two. The weightclasses are not directly comparable in such a way. McCallum was just outright better than someone like Baer to me.
Based on what? Personally, I think all of those guys have at the very least a good case to be ranked above him. McCallum was a very good mw but this is a very deep division. I probably forgot a few too. Harry Greb Carlos Monzon Ray Robinson Marvin Hagler Bernard Hopkins Dick Tiger Tommy Ryan Tony Zale Jake LaMotta Bob Fitzsimmons Freddie Steele Charley Burley Joey Giardello Gene Fullmer Emile Griffith Nino Benvenuti Teddy Yarosz Fred Apostoli Holman Williams Mike O´Dowd Rodrigo Valdez Frank Klaus Tiger Flowers Mickey Walker Mike Gibbons Ken Overlin Marcel Cerdan Michael Nunn James Toney Roy Jones Jr. Jack Dempsey Johnny Wilson Al Hostak Rocky Graziano Vito Antuefermo Sumbu Kalambay
I got the winnah- Willie Pep beating Sandy Saddler on Feb.11,1949 in 15 rds.,avoiding the stronger murderous punching Saddler. It was not only skillful,it was UNCANNY !!!
What are you insinuating, Bodhi? That the Heavyweight division is just as deep as the Middleweight division, and therefore your comparison holds perfect validity? I doubt if I'd even have Baer in a top 20 Heavyweights list, to be honest. Either way, it simply doesn't work like you're making it out to. You could find the kind of quality you'd find in a top 20 Heavyweights list going through the top 50 or more Middleweights. Why not just compare them on their overall worth as fighters? In that light I think it's obvious to most that McCallum was Baer's superior, and easily.
McCallum was very much an unsung hero. He should have been given an invite to the Hagler,Hearns,Leonard and Duran party. He'd have fitted in admirably.
