Knocked flat by Brewster and Sanders, two stiffs at best. And not ONE noteworthy victory. And you think Vlad is underrated ??? Priceless ...

I think Morrison remains a bit underrated. He did only lose 3 times and threw one of the sickest hooks the division has ever seen. He would be dangerous to anyone he faced. Unfortunately, given his stamina issues, partying and suspect chin, anyone he faced would have been dangerous to him.

Such a difficult topic to answer.
One boxer may be overrated to someone, and underrated to another. There is a general consensus of course, but even within that there will be widely varying opinions.
Also, being overlooked isn't necessarily the same thing as being underrated. Some boxers may even be underrated in terms of skill, but overrated in terms of overall legacy, and vice-versa.

For instance, from a skills perspective I don't think Larry Holmes is overrated, but his overall legacy for me is. He had a long unbeaten run as champ, but many of his title defences were against poor opposition. When half of your title opposition (or even more than half) is against has-beens or never-wases, then it's got to be taken into account. I just don't think that it was as impressive as it looks on paper, and there were a number of good heavies in his era that he never got to fight.

Francesco Damiani was mentioned earlier, and I think that sometimes he does get underrated. Then again, he ultimately never achieved much..but he was a talented big man who was generally unknown outside of Europe.

Good mention ! If you look at what Byrd did as really a blown up middle, pretty incredible ! No one is saying that he was a great heavy by any stretch. But, for a smallish heavy with zero power he did ok for himself and you had to work to beat him.

That hook and lack of defence , stamina and questionable chin made him fun to watch

Page fought lots of names but was very inconsistent but he does get overlooked these days . Damiani's always gave me the feeling that he could of gone a little further in the sport if he had really wanted to be in the ring . Michael grant I had forgotten about totally overrated .

If Ali's era was weak then I'd like to know what Elroy considers a strong era. Foreman, Frazier, Norton, Quarry, Ellis, Patterson, Bonavena, Chuvalo, Young, Shavers, Bugner, Lyle don't scream "weak" to me. Maybe sometimes overrated due to nostalgia but certainly not weak. Maybe it's just me showing my age but That era wasn't weak in my opinion.

I think that Elroy grades eras on how well the top 10 would have done in a body building contest, except that there is no penalty for having rolls of fat hanging over the top of your trunks.

Indeed anything that increases their weight, makes them better!

As the one who set the topic...some really interesting posts...its just opinions after all..Elroy's post slightly lost me..inferring that Ali boxed in a weak era..Liston Foreman ,Frazier, Norton, Lyle Shavers,Young.? mmmm?
The Larry Holmes shout for over rated is interesting..but conversely if you are going to reign for several years you cant have epic fights every 6 months or you just wouldnt last long..like Ali he had to mix the big fights around some 'lesser' opponents...wins over Norton, Cooney,Williams,Weaver,Snipes,Witherspoon..etc read well enough...that era was just slightly before my time but i believe he gets criticism for avoiding people..although i am not sure exactly who..Greg Page would be one ?
Lennox a good shout for under rated..no fighter he ever fought looked a better fighter than him..what more could he do ? I dont think any heavyweight beat a longer list of fighters that at the moment he fought them, seemed genuinely strong opposition.
Manny Steward said criticism of Lennox stemmed from him taking several fighters into the later rounds that he should have blown away...
I thought Foreman may have popped up..a bit like Holmes his career could be viewed 2 ways...some spectacular wins in career one,in career two you have to admire his eventual achievement in winning the title...on the flip side, take away blowing away Frazier and Norton both of whom were intimadated and overwhelmed and the small Moorer, which great fighters did he beat ? He blew his biggest assignment v Ali with incredibly poor tactics and was outfoxed in not dissimilar fashion by Jimmy Young...peoples views on Foreman would be interesting..
Tyson is an interesting shout for overrated...as soon as he lost his focus he looked what he was..a small heavyweight who wasnt anything special...but on his best days 1986-88 he looked totally awesome.
As for a slightly lower grade fighter i would say Renaldo Snipes was under rated if you look at his career overall ,deserved another title shot.Tony Tucker slightly under rated.Tua and Cooney vastly over rated IMO.

I am a big cooney fan and for me a big talent wasted if he were around today he'd be the top contender
