I think I'd have to settle for a top five, this sounds good, but Jersey Joe is worthy of top 5 slot still
I think Ali's power is underrated, to be honest. He KO'd 60% of his opponents... and those opponents were pretty damned good from early in his career. His defense, tho not orthodox, was amazing at times, especially earlier in his career. That's just ludicrous. And ask Cleveland WIlliams, Joe Frazier or George Foreman if he didn't have a killer instinct.
I think Eddie Ezzard has it right, if we're talking organizational belts, that Andy Ruiz was the roundest champion. Ruiz or Buster Mathis.
We can agree to disagree. Like I said he was not the heaviest handed guy but he checked all the other boxes including defense and killer instinct. He was short on pure power but he still had enough power to get some good fighters out of there. Sure he took a lot of punches late in his career but Prime Ali was great defensively. As far as killer instinct, he beat on plenty of guys with NFTG.
I don't think Ali was a big puncher, I just think he was a master at exploiting openings, he was very agressive, and knew how to wear opponents out in order to knock them out. But Ali did have a mean straight hand ala Norton II, Frazier II, Foreman, and Lyle.
Evander had all of the attributes listed above he was a 7/10 at the minimum in all attributes listed without ignoring anything he is perhaps the most versatile heavyweight ever obviously he rates higher in some attributes but as far as being a complete fighter goes it is the real deal. Joe Louis is also a near perfect fighter himself in spots we would view as weak spots he still excelled more then most boxers in those attributes.
at least Mathis really could box pretty well for such a huge guy. Very competitive against Frazier for ten rounds, and Chuvalo too. Moved real well for a man of his enormity, and of course could punch pretty hard, most would at 350 pounds. He was very overweight, but not a disgrace to boxing, like, say, Butterbean or Ruiz.
I like Sonny Liston here. He was a standard boxer with extreme power. He had a long and stiff jab, great boxing rhythm which allowed him to slip, shoulder roll, parry and dance away from a rush when he wanted. He like Louis, rarely lost control of his rhythm and timing when he had his man hurt. His right had was pure, his hook could be short or wide and was as powerful as any at that weight. He threw in combinations inside and looked for counters outside. He was built like a tank and known as a harsh man who hurt people in and out of the ring. He was not as fast as Ali, Tyson, or Louis but he was not slow. He was just as powerful a puncher as Louis or Foreman. He was as strong as Frazier or Tyson or anyone else I can think of on the inside and had it not been for Clay/Ali I have a hard time figure out who ends his reign.
