hofguy, yes Cassius Clay had a bout with Tony Madigan at MSG [not listed above] which I saw. It was a very close decision for Clay, but Tony Madigan was a helluva an amateur for sure...
I knew that Ali fought Jimmy Ellis in the golden gloves but didn't know Jimmy beat him in one of them. Those two sure went way back.
I have researched this for years and I can not find any proof that Price even fought Ali (Clay). They claim that he beat Ali during the 1960 Olympic Trials which never happened. If anyone has proof, like an article in 1960, not years later, that this happened, PLEASE post it!
yeah henry, i seen you posted that the other day on a FB page. Interesting . Is it an oft regurgitated myth or did it happen?
What seems to have happened is that, after Price and Clay won the heavyweight and light-heavyweight trials respectively, there remained the possibility that Clay would be the one selected to represent the US at heavyweight in the Olympics. He was, after all, the national Golden Gloves champion at that weight. In August 1960 the boxers shortlisted for the Olympics were matched against each other at Fort Dix in a series of no-decision exhibition bouts to finalise the team. As far as I know, no one can find a next-day report on these bouts, but it's reasonable to assume that Clay-Price was one of them. Shortly afterwards it was announced that Price remained the selection at heavyweight and Clay at light-heavyweight. According to Clay's local paper, this was because the alternate light-heavyweight Allen Hudson had broken a hand so that Clay was needed to fill that spot. According to Price's local paper, it was because he had looked impressive winning the final round of their three-round exhibition. Several years later, after Clay became world champion, people started to tell the story that Price - serving in Vietnam at the time - was the last man to beat him. Clearly that's not strictly true, since winning one round in an exhibition isn't winning a fight, but it's not totally made up either. https://pasteboard.co/KalWIRA.png https://pasteboard.co/KalXbNj.png
