I was roaring drunk* when I got this news, from a bouncer who DKSAB and had no idea what I meant by "He better keep on his toes, because Joe's been lying in ambush right behind the pearly gates almost 5 years with a mean hook..." :-( (*of course, these days, it would've been statistically unlikely for me not to be.) Requiescat in pace, game changer.
As a black man who came of age in the sixties, Ali was an icon to my generation. He gave us a lot to be proud of. I actually cried when Frazier won their first fight. I once met him in New Orleans after the second Spinks fight and found him to be a very thoughtful man. His place in history is secure and he will be remembered by generations to come.
A sad day. Ali was a truly great fighter and a legendary and iconic figure who was literally larger than life and transcended the sport like no one who came before him or anyone who follows him will probably even begin to come close to doing again. Terrible year for celebrity deaths. We've lost some absolute giants. :-( RIP Champ
Though it has been said that Ali was in his prime during his 60s championship days, the 1970s is often referred to as the golden age of the heavyweights and Ali was at the forefront of it all. With all due respect to those who are are still around and who contributed so much to that magic era like Foreman, Holmes and Shavers but with Ali's sad passing today, it also seems like a passing of a generation. That's some legacy. RIP champ.
Ali is one of the 3 most iconic figures in sports imo just thinking off the top of my head. Ali, Michael Jordan, Babe Ruth, and you can have it in any order.
I put :mj in there and forgot I put sportsatsch. I corrected it though:good as far as entertainment goes he's the most Iconic figure there is! Imo
